Il passato remoto esprime eventi conclusi e visti come chiusi nel passato. Si usa soprattutto nella narrazione scritta, nei testi storici e in molti racconti letterari. Nel parlato quotidiano il suo uso cambia secondo la regione e il registro: in molte aree del centro e del sud è ancora vivo, mentre in altre zone si preferisce spesso il passato prossimo. The remote past expresses events completed and viewed as closed in the past. It is used mainly in written narration, in historical texts, and in many literary tales. I verbi regolari in -are hanno forme proprie al passato remoto. Nella lingua comune compaiono due serie possibili per alcune persone, soprattutto alla prima persona singolare, alla terza persona singolare e alla terza persona plurale. Entrambe le serie sono riconosciute, ma la scelta concreta può dipendere da tradizione, stile e verbo.
Regular -are verbs have forms unique to the remote past. In everyday language there appear two possible series for some people, especially the first-person singular, the third-person singular, and the third-person plural. Both series are recognized, but the concrete choice can depend on tradition, style, and the verb.

Il passato remoto si distingue dal passato prossimo perché presenta il fatto come completamente chiuso e narrato da una certa distanza. Il passato prossimo, invece, è spesso percepito come più vicino al presente o più naturale nel parlato contemporaneo. Questa differenza non è assoluta in tutta Italia, perché le scelte reali cambiano secondo area geografica e tipo di testo.
The remote past distinguishes itself from the present perfect because it presents the fact as completely closed and narrated from a certain distance. The present perfect, instead, is often perceived as closer to the present or more natural in contemporary speech.
