I tempi progressivi descrivono un'azione in corso in un momento preciso. In italiano si formano soprattutto con stare più gerundio. Il loro uso non è sempre obbligatorio: spesso il presente semplice può esprimere un significato simile, secondo il contesto.
The progressive tenses describe an action in progress at a specific moment. In Italian they are formed mainly with stare plus the gerund. Their use is not always mandatory: often the present simple can express a similar meaning, depending on the context.
Il presente progressivo si costruisce con il presente di stare e il gerundio del verbo principale. Stare cambia secondo il soggetto. Il gerundio non cambia con il soggetto.
The present progressive is built with the present of stare and the gerund of the main verb. Stare changes according to the subject. The gerund does not change with the subject.

Il gerundio dei verbi regolari si forma dalla base del verbo. I verbi in -are fanno -ando. I verbi in -ere e in -ire fanno -endo.
The gerund of regular verbs is formed from the verb stem. Verbs ending in -are take -ando. Verbs ending in -ere and -ire take -endo.

The present progressive is often used for actions that are happening right now. It emphasizes the ongoing nature of the action. In many cases, however, the present simple is also possible and natural.
