Il passato prossimo si forma con un ausiliare al presente e con il participio passato del verbo principale. Gli ausiliari sono avere e essere, scelti secondo il verbo e il suo uso. Con essere, il participio concorda in genere e numero con il soggetto, mentre con avere il participio resta invariato.

Verbi riflessiviReflexive verbs

I verbi riflessivi e molti verbi pronominali costruiscono il passato prossimo con essere. In questi casi il participio concorda obbligatoriamente con il soggetto, perché il verbo si comporta come un predicato collegato alla persona che compie e riceve l’azione. Per questa area è utile confrontare la formazione con imperfetto e con gli altri tempi composti.

Reflexive verbs and many pronominal verbs form the present perfect with be. Il passato prossimo presenta l’azione come conclusa e centrata sul suo risultato, mentre l’imperfetto descrive lo sfondo, la durata o la continuità di un fatto passato. Per questo il passato prossimo è tipico delle azioni puntuali e delle sequenze finite, mentre l’imperfetto accompagna la cornice narrativa. La scelta tra i due tempi organizza il racconto e separa ciò che accade da ciò che fa da contesto.

The present perfect marks the action as completed and centered on its result, while the imperfect describes the background, the duration, or the continuity of a past event. For this reason the present perfect is typical of punctual actions and finite sequences, while the imperfect accompanies the narrative frame.
