Pretérito perfeitoPreterite.

O pretérito perfeito simples usa a raiz tiv em quase todas as formas e indica um estado ou posse concluídos no passado. Aparece com frequência para eventos pontuais, mudanças temporárias e experiências passadas. A relação com o tempo passado é a mesma tratada em Pretérito Perfeito.

The simple past tense uses the root tiv in almost all forms and indicates a state or possession completed in the past. It appears frequently for punctual events, temporary changes and past experiences. The relation to the past tense is the same as discussed in Pretérito Perfeito.

The imperfect past uses tinha and expresses continuity, habit, description, or prolonged state in the past. It is the most natural tense for talking about stable possession, age in the past and sensations that lasted. For its general structure, it is advisable to relate it to Pretérito Imperfeito.

The future of the past uses teria and expresses hypothetical consequence, courtesy or future action viewed from the past. With ter, it is common in conditional clauses, imagined plans and less direct evaluations. The modal value follows what is studied in Futuro do Pretérito.

SubjuntivoSubjunctive.

O presente do subjuntivo usa tenha e aparece em desejos, dúvidas, recomendações e finais dependentes. O pretérito imperfeito do subjuntivo usa tivesse e marca hipótese irreal, condição e comparação com passado. O futuro do subjuntivo usa tiver e é muito frequente em orações com quando, sempre que e se. Para o sistema verbal geral, veja Verbos Auxiliares.

The present subjunctive uses tenha and appears in wishes, doubts, recommendations and dependent clauses. The imperfect subjunctive uses tivesse and marks unreal hypothesis, condition and comparison with the past. Imperativo e formasImperative and forms.

O imperativo afirmativo usa tem, tenha, tenhamos, tende e tenham, enquanto o imperativo negativo segue as formas do subjuntivo. As formas nominais incluem ter no infinitivo impessoal, teres, termos, terdes e terem no infinitivo pessoal, além de tido no particípio e tendo no gerúndio. Em tempos compostos, ter funciona como auxiliar, como em tenho tido e tinha tido.

The affirmative imperative uses tem, tenha, tenhamos, tende and tenham, while the negative imperative follows the forms of the subjunctive. The non finite forms include ter in the impersonal infinitive, teres, termos, terdes and terem in the personal infinitive, as well as tido in the participle and tendo in the gerund. In compound tenses, ter functions as an auxiliary, as in tenho tido and tinha tido.

Usos e variantesUses and variants.

Ter pode funcionar como verbo principal de posse, como verbo auxiliar ou como verbo pronominal em usos mais fixos. Em construções como ter de e ter que, a primeira é mais comum em Portugal e a segunda predomina no português falado do Brasil. O uso existencial de tem gente é coloquial no Brasil, enquanto a norma culta prefere há gente; as formas de vós são raras e sobretudo literárias ou arcaicas.

Ter can function as a main verb of possession, as an auxiliary verb, or as a pronominal verb in more fixed uses. In constructions like ter de and ter que, the former is more common in Portugal and the latter predominates in Brazilian spoken Portuguese. The existential use tem gente is colloquial in Brazil, while the standard literary form prefers há gente; the vos forms are rare and mainly literary or archaic.
