As conjunções alternativas ligam palavras, grupos de palavras ou orações para apresentar opções, escolhas ou alternância. Elas mostram que uma possibilidade exclui a outra ou que duas ações podem acontecer de modo alternado. Em muitos casos, aparecem em estruturas coordenadas.
Alternative conjunctions link words, groups of words, or clauses to present options, choices, or alternation. They show that one possibility excludes the other or that two actions can occur in an alternating manner. In many cases, they appear in coordinated structures.
As formas mais usadas são ou, ou... ou, ora... ora, quer... quer e seja... seja. Algumas são mais frequentes na fala diária, enquanto outras aparecem mais em textos formais ou literários. Essa diferença de uso não muda a função principal de apresentar alternativa.

Essas conjunções podem indicar escolha entre possibilidades ou alternância entre fatos. Com ou e ou... ou, a ideia de escolha costuma ser mais clara. Com ora... ora, o foco costuma estar no revezamento de ações ou estados.
