Quanto e accordoQuanto and Agreement

Quanto, quanta, quanti e quante esprimono quantità e si accordano in genere e numero con il sostantivo che accompagnano. Quando introduce una domanda sul numero o sull’estensione di qualcosa, resta prima del nome e si comporta come un aggettivo interrogativo, in continuità con i valori di misura già trattati in Aggettivi Numerali. In alcuni usi colloquiali quanto può apparire in forma meno marcata, ma la concordanza resta il riferimento standard.

Quanto, quanta, quanti and quante express quantity and agree in gender and number with the noun they accompany. When introducing a question about the number or extent of something, it stays before the noun and behaves like an interrogative adjective, in keeping with the measure values already treated in Numeral Adjectives. In some colloquial uses quanto can appear in a less marked form, but the concordance remains the standard reference.

Aggettivo e pronomeInterrogative Adjective and Pronoun

Un aggettivo interrogativo modifica un sostantivo espresso, mentre un pronome interrogativo lo sostituisce. Per questo quale in Quale libro leggi? è aggettivo, mentre in Quale? ha valore pronominale. La distinzione è utile anche quando si confrontano forme simili nei Aggettivi Dimostrativi e negli altri Aggettivi Qualificativi, dove il rapporto con il nome determina la funzione.

An interrogative adjective modifies an expressed noun, while an interrogative pronoun substitutes it. Therefore Quale in Quale libro leggi? is an adjective, whereas in Quale? it has pronominal value. The distinction is also useful when comparing similar forms in Demonstrative Adjectives and in other Qualifying Adjectives, where the relation with the noun determines the function.

Posizione e usoPosition and Use

Gli aggettivi interrogativi si collocano prima del sostantivo che modificano e costruiscono con esso l’informazione interrogativa. La scelta tra che e quale dipende dal grado di definizione della domanda: che è più generico e colloquiale, quale è più selettivo e preciso. Questo sistema si estende bene anche agli usi con altre classi vicine, come gli Aggettivi Indefiniti e gli Aggettivi Relativi, quando il nome resta il centro della frase interrogativa.

Interrogative adjectives precede the noun they modify and build with it the interrogative information. The choice between che and quale depends on the degree of definition of the question: che is more generic and common in speech, whereas quale is more defined and narrows the choice. This system also extends well to uses with other nearby classes, such as Indefinite Adjectives and Relative Adjectives, when the noun remains the center of the interrogative sentence.
