What relational adjectives designate
The relational adjectives serve to establish a link between a noun and an idea of provenance, domain, belonging, or use. They do not describe a personal quality like great, calm or interesting ; they classify the object into a category. In une politique économique, économique links the policy to the economy. In un musée national, national indicates a relation to the nation. If the adjective disappears, the meaning becomes more general. If we replace it, the relation changes completely. These forms often work with noun groups close to those studied in Adjectifs qualificatifs, but their role is to connect, not judge.

Formation from a noun
Many relational adjectives come from a noun or a place. The base noun gives the main idea, then an ending forms the adjective: France gives français, musique gives musical, histoire gives historique. Other forms change more and remain less transparent: ville gives urbain, terre gives terrestre. The base can be a common noun, a proper noun or a toponym. We find this process in words like maritime, politique, parisien, scolaire. These formations belong to the same system as Formation de l'Adjectif, but here the main value is the relation with a name of origin rather than a quality.

Position after the noun
The relational adjective most often comes after the noun. We say une loi fiscale, un roman policier, un tissu synthétique. The noun comes first, then the adjective specifies the domain, the type, or the belonging. The noun + adjective structure is the normal form, especially when the adjective classifies the object into a precise category. In front of the noun, these adjectives become rare and often change meaning or style. With un français écrivain, the adjective no longer plays the same role as with la langue française. For the general position of adjectives, see Position de l'adjectif.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| We often place the relational adjective after the noun it specifies. | ||
| This placement helps show that the link is descriptive and not evaluative. | ||
| We keep this position when the noun remains the information center. | ||
| The position after the noun avoids the adjective appearing subjective or affective. |
Agreement in gender and number
Like all adjectives, relational adjectives agree with the noun they modify. We say une revue scientifique, un rapport scientifique, des revues scientifiques. The feminine and the plural follow the usual form of the adjective: français becomes française, municipal becomes municipale, national becomes nationale. The noun governed by the adjective thus fixes the gender and the number. This agreement works in the same way as in Accord de l'adjectif. In an expression like les autorités locales, locales agrees with autorités, not with an abstract idea of locality.

Fixed groups and specialized senses
Some relational adjectives form very stable groups with a noun. Politique fiscale, langue française, droit civil, énergie solaire are sets where the adjective defines a precise domain. In these groups, the adjective may take a technical sense that the context alone does not always give. Une question sociale does not mean only a question “related to society”; depending on the context, it refers to poverty, work, or inequalities. Un service public designates a service dependent on the State or a local authority. These word associations are common with the Adjectifs démonstratifs and the noun groups studied in Articles définis and Articles indéfinis, because the relational adjective specifies exactly what kind of thing is named.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| In certain groups, the relational adjective forms a fixed expression. | ||
| With certain nouns, the meaning becomes technical and very precise. | ||
| The group can function as an almost official term. | ||
| In these usages, the context fixes the meaning more than the adjective alone. |

Irregular forms and common constructions
Some relational adjectives have an irregular or less transparent form. Amazone gives amazonien, Europe gives européen, Paris gives parisien. Others come from old derivatives and do not form easily from the starting noun: végétal, marin, hébraïque. Orally, a construction with de and a simpler adjective is sometimes more natural: une maison de bois instead of une maison boisée depending on the intended meaning, or un problème de santé instead of a more technical adjective. The de construction keeps the link between the two nouns and often replaces a relational adjective when the context is more common. These sense links also serve to prepare the Pronoms Relatifs, which precisely restate an element already identified in the sentence.
| Word | Definition | |

| In some contexts, it can serve as a common and very visible form. |
