In French, many verbs follow a regular pattern. The most frequent end in -er, -ir or -re. To recognize them, look at the end of the infinitive. Parler, finir, vendre follow stable patterns, unlike some verbs of the Verbes irréguliers. In the sentence, the verb changes according to the subject: je parle, nous finissons, vous vendez. Pronominal verbs like se lever also follow a regular logic with a pronoun in front of the verb, and the Verbes auxiliaires often help to form other tenses.

The -er verbs are the most numerous and the easiest to conjugate. Remove -er from the infinitive, then add the ending of the subject: je parle, tu parles, il parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils parlent. With aimer, we say j’aime before a vowel. Regarder, travailler and écouter follow the same pattern. In a sentence like Elle regarde la télévision, the verb expresses the main action. With a pronominal verb like se parler, the position of the pronoun changes, but the verb stem remains regular.

Regular -ir verbs like finir and choisir have a ending different from -er verbs. In the present, the stem stays clear: je finis, tu finis, il finit, nous finissons, vous finissez, ils finissent. The -iss- group appears with nous and vous. This pattern is found in grandir, réussir and réfléchir. In everyday life, you would say Les enfants grandissent vite or Nous choisissons un film. To avoid confusion, compare with the Verbes irréguliers, which change more in form.

The -re verbs are built with a different stem. With vendre, we say je vends, tu vends, il vend, nous vendons, vous vendez, ils vendent. The final letter often disappears in the singular. Attendre, répondre, perdre and descendre follow the same conjugation pattern. In a real context, you can say J’attends le bus, Elle répond au téléphone or Nous vendons des fruits au marché. These verbs often appear with specific objects, and their form always depends on the subject.

The simple daily actions often use very common regular verbs. Manger is used for meals, marcher to move on foot, jouer for an activity or a game, acheter to obtain something in a store, and chanter for music or pleasure. They are used in short, direct sentences: Je mange une pomme, Ils marchent dans la rue, Nous achetons du pain. These verbs are useful with the Verbes pronominaux when the action is done to oneself, such as se laver after a meal or a walk.

To talk to someone, French often uses parler, poser, expliquer, téléphoner, raconter and inviter. Parler à quelqu’un requires a person after the preposition à : Je parle à mon frère. Poser une question is used to ask for something. Expliquer presents an idea more clearly. Téléphoner à quelqu’un works like parler à. Raconter is for a story, a day, or an event. Inviter opens an activity: Nous invitons des amis. These verbs are common in messages, conversations and appointments.
