The role of adverbs of place
Location adverbs indicate where a person, an object, or an action is located. They answer the question where? and add information about place without necessarily naming a specific place. In Il travaille ici, ici locates the action in space. In Le chat est là, là gives a general position. If the adverb is removed, the sentence remains correct, but the location disappears. These words often combine with stative verbs like être, rester or se trouver, but they also appear with movement verbs like aller or venir. Like other adverbs, they can also be studied with the Place des Adverbes.
Here, there, elsewhere, everywhere
Ici locates something at the place where the speaker is talking. Là indicates a less precise place, often visible or already known in the situation. Ailleurs designates another place. Partout means in all places or in all locations of a given space. We say Je reste ici, Pose le sac là, Je voudrais aller ailleurs, Il y a du monde partout. These adverbs do not change form. They are used to situate without detailing, unlike groups formed with prepositions. To understand how some adverbial words are built, you can also review the Formation des Adverbes.

Proximity and distance
Près marks a short distance. Loin marks a large distance. Tout près reinforces the idea of immediate proximity. We say La gare est près d’ici, La plage est loin, Le musée est tout près. With près, a complement introduced by de is often added when specifying the landmark. With loin, one often constructs loin de + noun. In a sentence like Il habite près du centre, the adverb indicates the distance relative to a reference place. To talk about time or frequency with words close to these forms, the Adverbes de Temps and the Adverbes de Fréquence follow other uses.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| We use près to say that a place is not far from another point. | ||
| We use tout près to emphasize a very small distance. | ||
| We use loin to say that a place is at a great distance. |
Position relative to a reference point
Devant, derrière, dessus et dessous locate an element relative to another. They indicate a precise position in space. Devant places it on the visible or frontal side, derrière places it at the rear, dessus places it on the upper surface, dessous places it beneath the surface. We say La voiture est devant la maison, Le jardin est derrière l’immeuble, Le livre est dessus, Le papier est dessous. These forms are often used with être or with verbs that describe a stable position. They replace a longer group when the landmark is obvious. In Mets le vase devant la fenêtre, the relationship between the two elements is enough to understand the location.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| We use devant to place something on the front side of another element. | ||
| We use derrière to place something on the side opposite to the front. | ||
| We use dessus to say that an element is on the upper part of another. | ||
| We use dessous to say that an element is under the lower part of another. |
Inside, outside, interior, exterior
Dedans and dehors are very common in speech. Dedans indicates the inside of a closed or delimited space. Dehors indicates the outside. We say Les enfants jouent dedans, Il fait froid dehors. When a more explicit form is wanted, one uses à l’intérieur and à l’extérieur. These groups give the same idea, but with more precision or in a more formal style. À l’intérieur de la maison and à l’extérieur du bâtiment clearly show the boundary of the space. Intérieur and extérieur can also function as nouns or adjectives, but in these place uses, the structure is most often à l’intérieur de + name and à l’extérieur de + name.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| We use dedans in speech to mean inside a place or an object. | ||
| We use dehors in speech to mean outside of a place. | ||
| We use à l intérieur for a more precise and neutral expression. | ||
| We use à l extérieur for a more precise and neutral expression. |

Movement and direction
Some place words not only show a position but also a direction. Vers indicates an orientation or an approximate destination. En haut and en bas indicate movement toward a higher or lower area. Au-dessus and en dessous mark a position or movement along the vertical axis, with a sense of separation. Autour indicates circular movement or a position very close to the sides of an object. We say Les élèves vont vers la sortie, Monte en haut, Descends en bas, L’avion passe au-dessus de la ville, Le chat dort en dessous de la table, Ils marchent autour du parc. These expressions are often more precise than a single adverb, especially when direction matters as much as place. They are used together with movement verbs and with verbs that describe a trajectory.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| We use vers to show a approximate direction without specifying the arrival. | ||
| We use en haut to indicate a direction toward the top. | ||
| We use en bas to indicate a direction downward. | ||
| We use au dessus to locate something higher than a reference point. | ||
| We use en dessous to locate something lower than a reference point. | ||
| We use autour to show movement in a circle around a point. |
Choosing the right form
A single adverb is suitable when the place remains general: ici, là, ailleurs, partout, dedans, dehors. A prepositional group is suitable when the landmark must be precise: à côté de la porte, près du métro, au fond du jardin, à l’intérieur de la salle. The choice depends on the degree of precision. Il attend ici gives a simple location. Il attend devant la bibliothèque gives the exact position relative to a landmark. The same idea can change depending on the context: là can designate a visible place, already known, or simply opposite to ici. Dedans can replace à l’intérieur in a more everyday register, while au-dessus de and en dessous de specify the relation between two objects. Meaning thus comes from both the chosen word and the landmark it accompanies.
