Values of the conditional
The conditional is used to present an action as imagined, not certain or dependent on another situation. It is used to express a wish, an eventuality, a hypothesis or a fact seen as possible but not realized. It also appears to soften a judgment and to take distance from what is said. In a sentence like J’aimerais partir, the form shows a desire. In Il serait malade, it signals information reported with caution. The conditional places the action in a possible world rather than in the immediate real.
Polite requests
To ask something tactfully, French often uses the conditional with a verb of request or of wanting. We say Je voudrais un café, Pourriez-vous m’aider ?, J’aimerais connaître votre adresse. The structure remains simple: subject + verb in the conditional + complement. With pouvoir, the request becomes softer: Pourriez-vous ouvrir la fenêtre ? In a shop, at the reception or in a message, this form avoids a direct order and gives a more respectful tone.

Hypotheses with if
When si introduces an imaginary or unlikely situation, the consequence is built with the present conditional. We say Si j’avais du temps, je voyagerais davantage, S’il faisait froid, nous resterions à la maison. The clause with si takes the imperfect, then the main clause takes the conditional. The schema is thus si + imparfait, conditionnel présent. This structure is used to imagine a result dependent on an unreal or simply envisaged condition.

Future seen from the past
In reported speech in the past, the conditional expresses a future event from the point of view of a past moment. A sentence like Il a dit qu’il viendrait shows that, at the moment he spoke, the action was still to come. This form is often found after a verb in the past: annoncer, dire, préciser, croire. French thus keeps the initial perspective. The conditional does not mark here a hypothesis, but a temporal relation in the narrative.

Regular present conditional
The regular present conditional is formed with the stem of the future followed by the endings of the imperfect: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. We take the infinitive for regular verbs: parlerais, finirais, vendrais. For verbs ending in -re, we remove the final e: je vendrais from vendre. The form remains the same for the three singular persons and for the two first plural, which facilitates recognition of the mood.

Common irregular verbs
Several very common verbs have an irregular stem in the present conditional. Avoir gives j’aurais, être gives je serais, aller gives j’irais, faire gives je ferais, pouvoir gives je pourrais, venir gives je viendrais. The rest of the form follows the regular endings of the present conditional. These stems also serve in other future-related tenses, so you must memorize them as base forms. They appear everywhere in everyday language, in requests, hypotheses and past narration.

Regular past conditional
The past conditional is built with the auxiliary in the conditional present followed by the past participle. With avoir, we get j’aurais parlé, tu aurais fini, il aurait vendu. With être, we form je serais allé, elle serait partie. The choice of the auxiliary follows the same rules as in the usual compound tenses. The structure is therefore aurais or serais + past participle. This form allows situating the action as prior to a moment imagined, reported or not realized.

Uses of the past conditional
The past conditional is used to talk about a fact that did not happen: J’aurais voulu venir, Ils seraient partis sans prévenir. It also expresses regret: J’aurais dû répondre plus tôt. In a narrative, it can present a past hypothesis or unconfirmed information. After a verb in the past, it can announce a future that did not occur, as in indirect discourse, and it is very useful with Discours Indirect. It is also found in formulations close to Subjonctif when an idea remains uncertain, but here the form retains a sense of imagined or postponed fact.

| On choisit le conditionnel passé pour imaginer un autre passé que celui qui a eu lieu. |

With if, no conditional
After si, French does not use the conditional in the clause introduced by si. We say Si j’avais de l’argent, j’achèterais une voiture, and not Si j’aurais de l’argent. The condition is formed with si + imparfait for a present or imagined hypothesis, or with si + plus-que-parfait for a past hypothesis, while the consequence takes the conditional. To organize these sentences correctly, the choice of tense in the first clause governs that of the second, including in Conditionnel Passé when the consequence is past.

In speech: softened forms
In informal speech, the conditional is sometimes replaced by the indicative when the context suffices to show politeness or attenuation. One hears Je voulais vous demander un renseignement where one would expect a more formal form like Je voudrais vous demander un renseignement. We also say Je pensais que tu pouvais venir to present a request or idea with gentleness. This tendency simplifies the utterance without changing the overall meaning. The conditional remains the clearest form in writing and in formal situations.
| Region | Variant | Definition | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| je voulais | This form is used in speech to soften a request instead of the longer conditional. | Je voulais vous demander un conseil sur mon parapluieI wanted to ask you for advice about my umbrella | ||
| je voudrais bien | This very polite construction is used to ask for something with warmth and simplicity. | Je voudrais bien une gaufre géante pour le goûterI would very much like a giant waffle for snack time | ||
| j aimerais | We choose this soft form in speech to express a wish without rigidity. | J aimerais voir un caribou en patinsI would like to see a caribou on skates |
