Em muitos casos, o feminino é formado com mudança final regular, mas alguns adjetivos mantêm a mesma forma para ambos os gêneros. The adjective varies in masculine and feminine when the form distinguishes the two genders. In many cases, the feminine is formed with a regular final change, but some adjectives keep the same form for both genders. O adjetivo também varia em singular e plural para acompanhar o substantivo. Quando o substantivo está no plural, o adjetivo normalmente assume a mesma marca de plural, o que se observa em sequências frequentes do português e em usos ligados a Adjetivos Numerais. Em registros coloquiais, essa concordância pode aparecer mais flexível na fala, mas a norma geral mantém o acordo formal.

The adjective also varies in singular and plural to accompany the noun. When the noun is plural, the adjective normally takes the same plural marking, as observed in frequent sequences of Portuguese and in uses related to Numeral Adjectives. In colloquial registers, this agreement may appear more flexible in speech, but the general rule maintains formal agreement.

A concordância adjetival reúne a variação de gênero e número entre adjetivo e substantivo. Por isso, a forma do adjetivo muda conforme o nome que qualifica, garantindo relação gramatical clara e natural. Adjective agreement brings together the variation in gender and number between adjective and noun. Therefore, the form of the adjective changes according to the noun it qualifies, ensuring a clear and natural grammatical relation. Em posição posposta, o adjetivo costuma apenas qualificar o substantivo de modo direto. Em posição anteposta, a ordem pode acrescentar valor estilístico, afetivo ou avaliativo, e em certos casos altera o sentido lexical da expressão. A leitura mais precisa depende do contexto e da variedade de uso, como acontece em outras escolhas de ordem tratadas em Posição do Adjetivo.

In postposed position, the adjective usually only directly qualifies the noun. In preposed position, the order can add stylistic, affective or evaluative value, and in some cases it alters the lexical sense of the expression. The most precise reading depends on context and variety of use, as seen in other order choices treated in Position of the Adjective.

The adjective can express comparison analytically, with more, less or as, and synthetically in some irregular adjectives. These constructions allow comparing qualities between people, objects or situations, and also serve as the basis for intensified expressions in the Portuguese system.

SuperlativoSuperlative

O superlativo apresenta a qualidade em grau elevado. No superlativo relativo, a qualidade é destacada dentro de um conjunto, como em o mais, a mais, os mais e as mais. No superlativo absoluto, a intensidade pode ser marcada por muito, bastante ou por sufixos como íssimo, o que também se relaciona com Adjetivos Superlativos.

The superlative presents the quality in a high degree. In the relative superlative, the quality is highlighted within a group, as in the most, the most (masculine/feminine variations), the most and the most. In the absolute superlative, intensity can be marked by very, quite, or by suffixes such as -íssimo, which also relates to Superlative Adjectives.

O adjetivo pode funcionar como substantivo quando passa a nomear pessoas, grupos ou qualidades abstratas. Nesses casos, a palavra mantém a ideia de adjetivo, mas ocupa o lugar de um nome, como em o belo ou os pobres. Esse uso é frequente em textos formais e também em construções nominais ligadas a identidade, valor social e abstração.

The adjective can function as a noun when it comes to naming people, groups, or abstract qualities. In these cases, the word retains the idea of an adjective, but occupies the place of a noun, as in 'the beautiful' or 'the poor'. This use is common in formal texts and also in nominal constructions linked to identity, social value and abstraction.

IntensidadeIntensity

Os adjetivos admitem gradação por meio de intensificadores como muito, pouco e bastante. Essas palavras não alteram a função do adjetivo, mas aumentam, reduzem ou modulam a força da qualidade expressa. Em usos informais, a intensificação pode ser ainda mais expressiva, embora a estrutura básica permaneça estável.

Adjectives allow gradation through intensifiers such as very, a little, and quite. These words do not alter the function of the adjective, but increase, decrease or modulate the strength of the expressed quality. In informal use, intensification can be even more expressive, though the basic structure remains stable.
