The contracted forms arise from the meeting of di, a, da, in and su with the corresponding definite article. The article always agrees with the noun that follows, so masculine and feminine, as well as singular and plural, produce distinct series. Uso e posizioneUsage and Position

La preposizione articolata si usa quando la preposizione governa un nome determinato, quindi un referente preciso e riconoscibile nel contesto. Nella frase precede sempre il sostantivo o il pronome nominale che introduce, e l’elemento finale mantiene l’accordo di genere e numero con quel nome. Nelle espressioni con nomi geografici l’uso può variare per registro e per area, come in Italia oppure nell’Italia, soprattutto quando il nome è sentito come più o meno determinato.

The contracted preposition is used when the preposition governs a definite noun, i.e., a precise and recognizable referent in context. In a sentence it always precedes the noun or nominal pronoun it introduces, and the final element keeps gender and number agreement with that noun. In expressions with geographical names, usage can vary by register and region, as in in Italia or nell'Italia, especially when the name is felt as more or less definite.

Con con e per le forme articolate sono rare, anche se alcune forme come col sopravvivono in registri tradizionali o colloquiali. In molti casi i nomi di città compaiono senza articolo, soprattutto quando il nome è usato in modo diretto e non determinato. Dialetti, stile letterario e registro possono conservare varianti più antiche o più locali, ma la norma contemporanea privilegia le forme più trasparenti e regolari.

Con and con-joined forms are rare, even though some forms like col survive in traditional or colloquial registers. In many cases city names appear without an article, especially when the name is used in a direct and undetermined way. Dialects, literary style and register can preserve older or more local variants, but contemporary standard favors more transparent and regular forms.
