The gerund is formed with en + present participle. We say en parlant, en finissant, en choisissant. The form preserves the idea of an ongoing action, linked to another action. To recognize this structure, first look for en, then the form in -ant.

The regular present participle is most often formed from the nous form of the present. We take the stem and add -ant: nous parlons gives parlant, nous finissons gives finissant, nous vendons gives vendant. This form is also used in the Participe Passé and other verbal constructions, but here it appears after en.

Regular formation of the present participle
Idea
🗣️We form the present participle often with the ending ant from the nous form of the present.
🏁For ir verbs, we often keep the nous stem before ant.
🙂The present participle remains invariable and keeps the same form for all subjects.

The gerund indicates that two actions advance at the same time. In Il lit en mangeant, the reading and the meal unfold together. The main verb provides the main action, and the gerund adds the accompanying action. This meaning is very common in the Temps verbaux when describing a scene or a sequence of actions.

Gerund for two simultaneous actions
UsageExplanation
🚶Parallel actionsThe gerund is used when two actions are done at the same time.
🍇Continuing main actionThe gerund shows that an action accompanies the main action without replacing it.
☀️Scene ambianceThe gerund can depict a lively scene when the setting moves at the same time as the action.

The gerund also serves to specify the manner. In Elle apprend en répétant, the repetition explains how she is learning. It can express the means: Il a réparé la porte en utilisant un tournevis. The gerund then answers the question how? or by what means?.

Depending on the context, the gerund can present the cause or a circumstance. In En ayant peur, il a quitté la pièce, the fear explains the departure. In En hiver, la route devient glissante, the group introduces a time or situation circumstance. The exact meaning comes from the link with the main verb and with the context of the sentence.

Gerund for cause and circumstance
Idea
☔The gerund can express the cause when it explains why the situation occurs.
🕊️The gerund can also express a circumstance that accompanies the main action.
🍰The context of the sentence helps determine whether the gerund shows the cause or the circumstance.

In some fixed uses, en + present participle can express a condition or an opposition. En travaillant davantage, tu progresseras presents a condition tied to the result. En voulant aider, il a tout compliqué shows that an intention produces the opposite effect. These constructions remain linked to another action and are mainly used to connect two ideas in a single sentence.

Gérondif in marked phrases
UsageExplanation
🥐Conditional suggestedIn certain phrases, the gerund serves to express a possible condition.
🐹Slight oppositionIt can also mark an opposition when two ideas gently clash.
🎉Contrast effectThe gerund strengthens the contrast when the situation contradicts expectation.

We use the gerund when the action accompanies the main verb. It always keeps en in front of the present participle. Without en, we simply have the present participle, which functions differently in the sentence and may enter into Propositions et Subordonnées. To choose the right form, check whether you want to show an action linked to another action, and whether that action should be presented as simultaneous, causally simultaneous, or circumstantial.

Choice between the gerund and the present participle
Idea
💃We choose the gerund when the action accompanies the main verb.
😺We avoid confusing the gerund with the present participle without en when the form remains adjectival or verbal.
🗺️The gerund retains a relationship value with the main verb and does not alone describe a noun.
