Relative pronouns introduce a subordinate clause and connect it to an antecedent already mentioned. Instead of repeating the noun, the relative resumes it and adds information: the girl who lives here, the book that I bought, the idea that Marta proposed. If we remove the relative, the sentence loses that connection and usually ends up incomplete or too general. In the structure of the sentence, the relative creates a link between the main clause and the subordinate clause, something that is also useful for forming Subordinate Clauses.

Basic function of the relative pronouns
Idea
🎤The relative pronouns join the subordinate clause with an antecedent without repeating it.
📘The relative provides extra information or identifies the antecedent within the sentence.

Que is the most frequent relative in Spanish. It serves for people, things, and ideas: the teacher who arrived late, the house that we saw, the decision that you made. It normally appears without a preposition and sounds natural in everyday speech. In many cases it can substitute for more specific forms when extra precision is not necessary. It also appears in very common relations with adjectives or verbs: the man I met, the problem you mentioned. When the antecedent is already clear, que keeps the clause agile and avoids repetitions. To contrast this function with other links in discourse, it is helpful to keep in mind the base of Pronouns.

Everyday uses of que relative
UsageExplanation
🍦People in everyday speechas the most natural option to refer to people in everyday conversations.
🚀Things and ideasto join information about objects or ideas without needing to repeat the noun.
🎬Phrases with general sensewhen the context already makes clear what is being talked about and the relative only links the information.

Quien and quienes are used mainly for people. The form changes in number: quien for one person and quienes for several. Their use is more frequent after a preposition or in more careful constructions: the person with whom I spoke, the students to whom he helped. They can also appear without an explicit antecedent when the reference is general: Whoever studies, learns. Compared with que, these forms sound more marked and more precise, especially when the relative is not the direct subject of the subordinate clause. Their behavior fits well with other uses of pronouns in Pronombres.

El que, la que, los que y las que are used to identify a specific referent within a set. The article agrees in gender and number with the antecedent: the house in which we live, the friends with whom I went out. This form appears often after a preposition and allows clearly pointing out which element is chosen or described: from all the books, the one I like the most. Compared to que, these forms add a sense of selection or more precise identification. They can also avoid ambiguity when there are several possible antecedents in the sentence.

Precise identification with the one
UsageExplanation
⏰Selection within a groupto point out a concrete option among several possibilities.
🪑Reference with articlewhen the article helps to specify the referent and avoid doubt.
🧦Plural identificationto choose several elements from a known set.

El cual, la cual, los cuales y las cuales function as more formal relatives. They agree in gender and number with the antecedent and usually appear in written texts, legal language, or careful explanations: the company, which changed headquarters, the students, with whom I worked. They are often used after a preposition when one wants to avoid confusion, especially if there is more than one nearby noun: the author of the book, which received a prize. Compared to que, these forms better separate relationships inside the sentence and provide more clarity in long structures.

Cuyo, cuya, cuyos and cuyas express possession or belonging. The concordance does not depend on the possessor, but on the possessed thing: the neighbor whose car is outside, the woman whose daughter studies medicine, the artists whose works we saw. That is why the relative changes according to the noun that follows. No article is used before cuyo. The structure is always: antecedent + cuyo + possessed noun + verb. This relative clause links two ideas into one sentence and avoids repetitions like the neighbor. His car is outside. It is also useful when precision is needed in Adjetivos Relativos.

Agreement of whose with possession
Idea
🧪Cuyo agrees with the possessed thing and not with the possessor.
🐈Cuyo expresses possession or relation between two elements.
🐉The form changes according to gender and number of the possessed.

Donde is used for place, cuando for time, and como for manner. They function as relatives when they refer back to an antecedent of that type: the city where I was born, the day when everything began, the way how he explained it. In many contexts, where is the most natural; when appears with concrete temporal references; how introduces the way something happens. These words link the subordinate clause to a place, a moment, or a manner already mentioned, so the relationship between the two parts of the sentence remains very clear. Their role is especially visible in phrases that describe places, dates, or procedures.

Relatives of place time and manner
UsageExplanation
🏰Placeto introduce a site related to the antecedent.
⏳Timeto situate a moment within the subordinate clause.
🐙Mannerto indicate the way in which something happens.

Many relatives appear after a preposition: with whom, of whom, in which, for which, about which. The preposition depends on the function the relative clause performs within the subordinate clause. If the relative is a complement of a verb or a noun, the preposition must be maintained: the person with whom I spoke, the topic about which you were talking. In more formal registers, el cual and its forms are common after a preposition because they avoid doubts about the antecedent. When the preposition introduces a reference to people, quien and quienes are also common: the doctor with whom I worked. This combination is very useful for constructing precise relationships within the same sentence.

Relatives with preposition and function
Idea
👟The preposition depends on the function the relative clause fulfills in the subordinate clause.
🍽️The choice changes depending on the antecedent and the level of formality.
🐇The preposition is not omitted when it is necessary for the structure.
