Cuyo links two nouns and avoids repeating an idea already mentioned. Instead of saying el profesor. El profesor vive cerca, you can say the professor whose son studies here lives close. The second noun provides the new information and cuyo maintains the relation between both parts. In a sentence like conocí a una mujer cuyo coche estaba en la puerta, the reader understands immediately that the car belongs to the woman without naming her again. The idea of possession appears within the same sentence, more compactly than with a separate sentence.

Cuyo changes to agree with the noun that follows, not with the possessor. Therefore cuyo is used before a masculine singular noun, cuya before a feminine singular, cuyos before a masculine plural, and cuyas before a feminine plural. We say el escritor cuyo libro leí, la ciudad cuyas calles son estrechas, los alumnos cuyos nombres aparecen en la lista and las casas cuyas ventanas dan al mar. The form always depends on libro, calles, nombres, ventanas. To see this kind of agreement more naturally, also help Adjetivos Demostrativos and Adjetivos Posesivos.

Cuyo expresses a relation of possession or belonging. It links an antecedent with something that belongs to it or that is linked to it. Therefore it can be equivalent to del que, de la que, de los que or de las que. La doctora cuyo despacho está cerrado means the doctor, of the office of which is closed. In normal Spanish, cuyo sounds more natural and shorter than repeating that relation with another structure. It can also appear with things and places: el país cuyas fronteras cambian or la mesa cuyas patas están rotas. The relation does not have to be possession of a material kind; it is enough that there is a link between the two nouns.

Cuyo does not take an article in front and always introduces a noun. You do not say el cuyo coche nor la cuyo amiga. The structure is noun + whose + noun. That first noun is the antecedent and the second is the possessed or related element. La familia cuyo hijo toca el piano places the family first and then the son. It can also appear after a preposition if the sentence requires it, as in la persona de cuya opinión hablamos. To better distinguish these relations, it is helpful to compare it with Pronombres Relativos, where the link between two ideas functions in another way.

In formal registers, cuyo appears frequently after a preposition, especially in careful writing. It is seen in expressions such as el autor acerca de cuyo trabajo discutimos or la ciudad en cuyo centro nació. In everyday conversation, many people prefer to substitute it with a structure with que and a possessive: el autor del que discutimos su trabajo or la ciudad en la que nació en el centro. That alternative sounds less literary and more direct, although it repeats information. Cuyo offers a more compact and elegant form, especially in academic, journalistic or administrative texts.
