What the future progressive expresses
The future progressive points to an action that will be in progress at a later moment. The view does not focus on whether the action starts or ends, but on seeing it advancing at that point in the future. The basic form is estar in the future simple + gerund: estaré trabajando, estarás viajando, estará leyendo. With this form, the action appears as something in progress within a future scene. It does not express a finished action, but an open action still moving in time.
Being in the future simple
To form the progressive future, you first need the conjugation of estar in the future simple. The forms are: estaré, estarás, estará, estaremos, estaréis, estarán. Each is joined to the gerund of the main verb: estaré estudiando, estarás comiendo, estará durmiendo, estaremos saliendo, estaréis leyendo, estarán trabajando. The auxiliary verb carries all the person and number information, so the gerund does not change.

Gerund of -ar verbs
The -ar verbs form the gerund with the stem + -ando. This gives forms like hablar + -ando = hablando, comprar + -ando = comprando, viajar + -ando = viajando, trabajar + -ando = trabajando. The verb stem is preserved and only the ending changes. That gerund is used after a form of estar to construct tenses like the progressive future and also in other verbal periphrastics, such as those studied in Perífrasis Verbales.

Gerund of -er and -ir verbs
The -er and -ir verbs form the gerund with the stem + -iendo. That is why comer gives comiendo, vivir gives viviendo, recibir gives recibiendo and leer gives leyendo in its irregular form. In regular verbs, the ending is always -iendo. When the verb ends in a vowel, the form may change to avoid difficult sounds, as happens with leer.

Common irregular gerunds
Some gerunds do not follow the regular formation and it is useful to recognize them as fixed forms. Ir produces yendo. Poder produces pudiendo. Decir produces diciendo. Venir produces viniendo. Dormir produces durmiendo. Morir produces muriendo. Leer produces leyendo. Oír produces oyendo. In several cases the stem vowel changes to maintain a natural pronunciation, and in others a y appears to avoid vowel clashes.

Action in progress in the future
Use the progressive future when you want to place an action within a specific future moment. The structure signals that the action will be ongoing at that moment: a las ocho estaré estudiando, mañana por la tarde estará lloviendo, el lunes estaremos viajando. The phrase usually includes a clear temporal reference, such as a las ocho, mañana, el lunes or a esa hora. The focus is on the action in progress within that point in the future.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Used to show that the action will be in progress at a precise future moment. | ||
| Used when you imagine a future situation that will already be happening and not just starting. | ||
| Used to emphasize that an activity will continue to develop during that moment. |
Two simultaneous actions
When two future actions happen at the same time, one can appear in the progressive future and the other in the future simple, or both can present as simultaneous actions. With mientras the relationship is clearly visible: mientras tú cocinas, yo estaré trabajando; mientras ellos viajan, nosotros estudiaremos. The progressive future paints an action as a continuous background, while the other advances as a parallel event. In Presente Progresivo simultaneity is used for the present; here it is carried into the future.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Used to indicate that two actions advance simultaneously in the future. | ||
| Used when one person does one thing and another person is in another parallel action. | ||
| Used to coordinate two scenes and show that they coincide in time. |
Future situation in progress
The progressive future is also used when a situation will already be underway in a precise future moment. It serves to place an activity within an agenda, a trip, a work, or a conversation in preparation: mañana a esta hora estaré volando a Madrid, en junio estarán viviendo en otra casa, a medianoche estaremos celebrando. The phrase presents the future as an already open scene, not as an isolated point. That is why it fits very well with exact time references, as in Pasado Progresivo and other progressive tenses.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Used when you want to say that an action will already be in progress at a certain time. | ||
| Used to present an action that will keep advancing on a concrete date. | ||
| Used when a context announces that the action will be developing at that moment. |

Emphasis on duration
This tense highlights the continuity of the action. The main idea is not only that something will occur, but that it will remain in progress for a stretch of the future. Estaré esperando, estarás conduciendo, estaremos trabajando draw attention to the process. That perspective is useful when the extension of the action, its movement, or its temporally open character matters. With activity verbs, the progressive future sounds more descriptive than the future simple.

Progressive future or future simple
The future simple presents a future action as a complete fact or as a decision, prediction, or guess. The progressive future presents the action in development at that moment. Compare mañana viajaré with mañana estaré viajando: the first only announces the fact, the second shows it in progress. It can also appear the future simple with a conjectural value in context: serán las seis expresses an estimate, not an action in progress. When you want to talk about duration, process, or future simultaneity, you choose the progressive future. When you want to announce, predict, or calculate, you choose the future simple.
