El presente progresivo expresa una acción en curso en el momento de hablar y destaca que la actividad está desarrollándose ahora. También se usa para acciones temporales dentro de un periodo más amplio, como una etapa concreta del mes, del día o de la semana. Con frecuencia aparece junto con ahora, en este momento y hoy.
The present progressive expresses an action in progress at the moment of speaking and emphasizes that the activity is happening now. La perífrasis se forma con el verbo estar conjugado en presente más un gerundio. La forma de estar aporta el tiempo gramatical y el gerundio aporta la idea de continuidad. Esta estructura se relaciona con Perífrasis Verbales y con Verbos auxiliares.

Gerundio de arGerund of -ar Verbs
Los verbos terminados en ar forman el gerundio añadiendo ando al lexema. Esta forma verbal mantiene la idea de acción en desarrollo y se combina con estar para construir el presente progresivo. El gerundio puede aparecer también en otros tiempos progresivos, como en Pasado Progresivo y Futuro Progresivo.

Los verbos terminados en er e ir forman el gerundio añadiendo iendo al lexema. Esta terminación es la misma para ambos grupos y permite reconocer rápidamente la forma progresiva. En usos cotidianos, este patrón se aplica a verbos muy frecuentes de la comunicación diaria.

Gerundios irregularesIrregular Gerunds
Algunos verbos no siguen la formación regular y cambian su base antes de añadir la terminación del gerundio. Leer pasa a leyendo, ir pasa a yendo, dormir pasa a durmiendo, decir pasa a diciendo y traer pasa a trayendo. Estas formas deben memorizarse porque no se obtienen con la regla general.

PronombresPronouns

Progresivo y simpleProgressive and Simple
El presente progresivo se elige para una acción en desarrollo, mientras que el presente simple expresa hábitos, estados y hechos generales. En muchos contextos informales, el presente simple puede sustituir al progresivo cuando el contexto ya deja clara la idea de acción actual. The present progressive is chosen for an action in progress, while the present simple expresses habits, states and general facts. In many informal contexts, the present simple can substitute the progressive when the context already makes clear the idea of a current action. The choice changes the focus: the progressive puts attention on the process and the present simple on the general situation, as in Present Simple.

Otros tiemposOther Tenses
La misma estructura progresiva puede aparecer en pasado y en futuro si el verbo estar se conjuga en esos tiempos.
