Basic distinction between verbs
Hacer is the most general and most frequent verb in daily life. It serves to talk about activities, jobs, changes, meals, chores and many concrete actions. Realizar appears less and sounds more formal, more precise or more administrative.
For normal conversation, hacer tends to be the default option: hacer la cena, hacer una llamada, hacer un dibujo, hacer una pregunta. Realizar is reserved more for contexts where the action is presented as a defined process or as the fulfillment of something: realizar una investigación, realizar una inspección, realizar una tarea.
The difference isn’t that one is correct and the other incorrect, but in the tone and in the type of situation. If you want to sound natural in most everyday contexts, Presente simple + hacer covers the most of what you need.

Actions, tasks and jobs
With actions and tasks, both verbs can appear, but they do not produce the same feeling. Hacer presents the activity directly and commonly: hacer la cama, hacer ejercicios, hacer deberes, hacer un trabajo para clase. Realizar focuses the task as something that is executed with more intention or with a more formal framework: realizar un trabajo de investigación, realizar un ejercicio, realizar una actividad.
In an office, in a school or in a report, realizar sounds natural because the task is seen as a procedure. At home, in the street or in a simple chat, hacer turns out more spontaneous. That’s why you say voy a hacer los deberes with more naturality than voy a realizar los deberes, although the second form is understood.
When the noun is very concrete and everyday, hacer dominates. When the noun names an organized action, realizar gains ground.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Use hacer when you are talking about a common and natural task in daily life. | ||
| Use realizar when the task sounds more technical, official, or organized. | ||
| Use hacer when the action is broad and you do not need a special tone. | ||
| Use realizar if you want to present the action as something prepared or completed carefully. |

Plans, objectives and projects
Realizar fits very well when the idea is to carry out something that has already been thought out: realizar un plan, realizar un proyecto, realizar un objetivo, realizar una propuesta. Here the verb not only talks about action, but about full execution.
It also works in work and study contexts where there is a defined goal: realizar un experimento, realizar un estudio, realizar una campaña. The phrase sounds as if there had been prior organization and an expected result.
Hacer can also appear with some of these nouns, but it changes the nuance. Hacer un proyecto may sound more general or less technical, while realizar un proyecto focuses on developing it until completion. With ideas like plan, objetivo, proyecto and investigación, realizar is usually the more precise option.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Use realizar when the idea is to begin and execute a plan clearly. | ||
| Use realizar when you are talking about completing a specific goal or purpose. | ||
| Use realizar when the focus is on moving a project forward to its result. | ||
| Use realizar when a plan becomes concrete actions. |
Fixed expressions with hacer
There are many combinations in which hacer is the natural form and realizar doesn’t fit. You say hacer una pregunta, hacer una llamada, hacer una foto, hacer la compra, hacer la cama, hacer daño, hacer ruido, hacer caso, hacer falta, hacer ejercicio.
In these expressions, hacer works as part of a fixed collocation. You do not freely choose the verb, because the full expression is already established in usage. That’s why it sounds odd to say realizar una foto or realizar ruido in a normal conversation.
It is also very common hacer + noun when the noun names a daily action: hacer planes, hacer una reserva, hacer una tortilla, hacer amigos. In these cases, learning the full collocation gives more naturalness than translating word by word.

Fulfillment and complete execution
Realizar can emphasize that something is fulfilled, executed or carried out to completion with clarity. That’s why it appears frequently in phrases like realizar una prueba, realizar una operación, realizar una revisión, realizar un trámite, realizar una encuesta. The verb presents the action as complete and organized.
With this use, the interest is in the correct execution of the procedure. A doctor realiza una operación, a company realiza una auditoría, a student realiza una prueba in a formal academic context. The verb gives a sense of precision and of an achieved result.
Hacer can express the action, but realizar emphasizes more the fact that the process is carried out from start to finish. That difference appears a lot in written texts and in professional language.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Use realizar when the action is completed from beginning to end. | ||
| Use realizar when an action follows a rule, procedure, or instruction. | ||
| Use realizar when you want to emphasize that something is actually carried out. | ||
| Use realizar when the accuracy with which something is done matters. |

Formal and administrative use
In documents, reports, institutional announcements and professional language, realizar sounds more natural than hacer. It is used to talk about procedures, management, controls and organized activities: realizar el pago, realizar una solicitud, realizar una comprobación, realizar una visita, realizar una evaluación.
In this register, realizar provides distance and precision. A bank notice will say realizar una transferencia more often than hacer una transferencia. A company may write realizar una investigación interna or realizar un seguimiento because the verb fits the formal tone.
Outside of that context, hacer remains the natural verb. In a conversation, voy a hacer un trámite sounds closer than voy a realizar un trámite. The change not only modifies the meaning; it also changes the style.
| Region | Variant | Definition | Example | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| realizar | Realizar is used more frequently in formal, technical, or administrative texts. | La oficina va a realizar una evaluación de riesgos con carpetas azules. The office is going to realizar a risk assessment with blue folders. | ||
| realizar | Realizar is used to give a more serious or institutional tone than hacer. | La institución va a realizar un informe con sellos dorados. The institution is going to realizar a report with golden seals. |
Common mistakes when choosing
The quick decision starts with a simple question: does it sound like a daily action or like a formal procedure? If it is daily, use hacer. If it is technical, administrative or planned, realizar may be better.
A common error is using realizar with very established expressions with hacer: hacer una pregunta, hacer una llamada, hacer la cama, hacer caso. Another error is choosing hacer in contexts where the tone requires precision: realizar una inspección, realizar una evaluación, realizar un informe.
When in doubt, think about the noun that accompanies the verb. If it belongs to daily life and fixed expressions, hacer is the natural choice. If it denotes a procedure, a management or an organized action, realizar fits better.
