Assim, a base singular gera uma forma singular e a base plural gera uma forma plural. Quando o nome é feminino ou masculino, a terminação do diminutivo ajusta se para refletir essa categoria gramatical.

The diminutive agrees in gender and number with the noun it modifies, just as adjectives and other nominal elements do. Thus, the singular base yields a singular form and the plural base yields a plural form. Após palavras terminadas em r, s ou z, é comum inserir z antes do sufixo, como acontece em Aumentativos nominais e noutras formações derivacionais semelhantes. Algumas palavras sofrem também alterações internas irregulares, porque a pronúncia favorece formas lexicalizadas já estabilizadas no uso.
