Referência básica
Pronomes demonstrativos indicam a posição de algo em relação a quem fala e a quem ouve. Em português, esta referência organiza-se em três zonas: perto do falante, perto do ouvinte e longe de ambos. A mesma lógica aparece para singular e plural, e para gêneros masculino e feminino. Também se aplica a ideia de proximidade no tempo e no discurso.
Demonstrative pronouns indicate the position of something in relation to the speaker and the listener. In Portuguese, this reference is organized into three zones: near the speaker, near the listener, and far from both. The same logic applies to singular and plural, and to masculine and feminine genders. It also applies to the idea of proximity in time and discourse.

Formas principais
As formas básicas são este e esta para proximidade do falante, esse e essa para proximidade do ouvinte, aquele e aquela para distância. Estes e essas, esses e essas, aqueles e aquelas são os plurais correspondentes. A escolha depende de gênero e número do substantivo que o pronome acompanha.

Uso com substantivo
O demonstrativo pode acompanhar um substantivo para identificar de qual elemento se fala. Neste caso, ele concorda com o substantivo em gênero e número. A frase resulta em identificação clara dentro do espaço ou do contexto definido. A diferença central é de referência, não de ênfase.
The demonstrative can accompany a noun to identify which element is being talked about. In this case, it agrees with the noun in gender and number. The phrase results in clear identification within the space or defined context. The central difference is reference, not emphasis.

Uso pronominal
O demonstrativo pode funcionar sem substantivo expresso, apontando para algo já conhecido no contexto. Nesses casos, a forma escolhida ainda mantém a lógica de proximidade. Frequentemente, a forma neutra aparece para referência a ideias, frases ou situações.
The demonstrative can function without an explicit noun, pointing to something already known in the context. In these cases, the chosen form still maintains the proximity logic. Frequently, the neutral form appears for reference to ideas, phrases, or situations.

Referência no discurso
No discurso, este costuma indicar algo que vem a seguir ou está sendo introduzido. Esse tende a indicar algo que já foi mencionado ou está imediatamente anterior. Aquele pode indicar uma ideia, trecho ou tempo mais distante na conversa ou no texto.
