Les accents

En français, il y a plusieurs accents sur les voyelles. Pour ce module, on étudie surtout l’accent aigu, l’accent grave et l’accent circonflexe. Les accents font partie de l’orthographe du mot et ils peuvent aussi changer la prononciation ou le sens.

In French, there are several accents on vowels. For this module, we study mainly the acute accent, the grave accent, and the circumflex. Accents are part of a word's spelling and they can also change pronunciation or meaning.

Trois formes

L’accent aigu s’écrit é. L’accent grave s’écrit è, à ou ù. L’accent circonflexe s’écrit ê, â, î, ô ou û.

The acute accent is written é. The grave accent is written è, à or ù. The circumflex accent is written ê, â, î, ô or û.

Sur quelles lettres

Tous les accents ne vont pas sur toutes les lettres. À ce niveau, il faut surtout reconnaître les voyelles qui portent souvent un accent. La lettre e porte les trois accents, mais a et u ne portent pas l’accent aigu dans les mots courants.

Not all accents go on all letters. At this level, you mainly need to recognize the vowels that commonly bear an accent. The letter e carries all three accents, but a and u do not carry the acute accent in common words.

Effet sonore

L’accent peut changer la façon de lire un mot. En général, é a un son plus fermé, et è ou ê ont souvent un son plus ouvert. À l’oral, cette différence existe souvent, mais selon les régions ou les personnes, la prononciation peut varier.

The accent can change the way a word is read. In general, é has a sound that is more closed, and è or ê often have a sound that is more open. In speech, this difference often exists, but depending on regions or people, pronunciation can vary.

Sens différent

Parfois, l’accent change le sens d’un mot. Dans des mots très courants, il faut donc regarder l’accent pour bien lire et bien écrire. Quelques oppositions sont stables, mais d’autres formes changent selon l’usage moderne.

Sometimes, the accent changes the meaning of a word. In very common words, you must therefore look at the accent to read and write correctly. Some oppositions are stable, but other forms change according to modern usage.

Orthographe variable

Dans certains mots, l’accent fait partie de l’orthographe traditionnelle, mais l’usage peut varier. Par exemple, le circonflexe est parfois moins utilisé dans l’orthographe révisée, surtout sur i et u. Les deux formes peuvent être acceptées dans quelques mots, selon le dictionnaire ou le contexte.

In some words, the accent is part of traditional spelling, but usage may vary. For example, the circumflex is sometimes less used in revised orthography, especially on i and u. Both forms can be accepted in some words, depending on the dictionary or context.
