Common nouns indicate a class of referents and do not refer to a single individual. For this reason words like dog, city and book can refer to any member of the category. Their precise value depends on the context and the elements that accompany them.

Many common nouns follow a fairly regular gender distinction: masculine endings often end in o and feminine endings in a. This correspondence is useful to quickly recognise the grammatical gender, as detailed in Gender of Nouns. The article and adjectives agree with the noun they accompany.

Alcuni sostantivi non seguono le terminazioni più comuni e richiedono attenzione particolare. Nomi come mano sono femminili pur terminando in o, mentre uomo forma il plurale uomini. In certi casi la variazione dipende dalla storia della parola e va memorizzata.

Some nouns do not follow the most common endings and require special attention. Nouns such as mano are feminine even though they end in o, while the noun uomo has an irregular plural. In some cases the variation depends on the word’s history and must be memorized.

Alcuni sostantivi restano uguali al singolare e al plurale. Questo gruppo comprende vari prestiti stranieri e parole d uso stabile come film e caffè. Il numero si riconosce dall articolo e dal contesto, non dalla forma del nome.

Some nouns remain the same in singular and plural. This group includes a number of foreign loans and stable words like film and coffee. The number is recognised from the article and from the context, not from the form of the noun.

Forma in istaNouns in -ista

I sostantivi in ista mantengono lo stesso genere e cambiano soprattutto nel plurale. La forma maschile passa in isti e la femminile in iste, come accade in parole legate a professioni o attività. Il comportamento è regolare e utile per riconoscere gruppi di nomi simili.

Nouns ending in -ista keep the same gender and mainly change in the plural. The masculine form becomes -isti and the feminine -iste, as occurs with words related to professions or activities. The behaviour is regular and useful for recognising groups of similar nouns.

QuantitàQuantity

I sostantivi numerabili indicano elementi contabili, mentre i non numerabili esprimono sostanze o materiali che non si contano direttamente. Con i non numerabili si usa spesso un articolo singolare con valore generico o il partitivo, come nel trattamento di Sostantivi Numerabili. Il pane, per esempio, si misura più facilmente in quantità che in unità isolate.

Countable nouns indicate countable elements, while uncountable nouns express substances or materials that cannot be counted directly. With uncountables one often uses a singular article with generic meaning or the partitive, as in the treatment of Countable Nouns. Bread, for example, is more easily measured in quantity than in isolated units.

I sostantivi collettivi sono singolari nella forma ma indicano un gruppo di elementi. La folla, per esempio, designa molte persone considerate come insieme. Il verbo e gli accordi possono dipendere dal valore grammaticale del nome e dal senso della frase.

Collective nouns are singular in form but indicate a group of elements. The crowd, for example, designates many people considered as a whole. The verb and agreement can depend on the grammatical value of the noun and the sense of the sentence.

Ordine NominaleNominal Order

Nel sintagma nominale, l articolo precede il sostantivo e l aggettivo qualificativo segue di norma il nome, anche se in alcuni casi può precederlo per dare enfasi o sfumatura stilistica. L accordo tra articolo, sostantivo e aggettivo resta obbligatorio, come nella sequenza la bella casa. Nei registri parlati, l articolo può talvolta essere omesso con alcuni astratti o con professioni.

In the noun phrase, the article precedes the noun and the qualifying adjective normally follows the noun, although in some cases it can precede it to give emphasis or a stylistic nuance. The agreement between article, noun and adjective remains mandatory, as in the sequence the beautiful house. In spoken registers, the article may sometimes be omitted with some abstract nouns or with professions.

Gli alterati modificano la sfumatura del sostantivo senza cambiarne la categoria grammaticale. Un diminutivo può esprimere piccolezza, affetto o attenuazione, come in libricino. La forma alterata conserva il legame con il sostantivo base e si collega bene ai processi studiati in Alterati Sostantivali e Diminutivi Sostantivali.

Altered forms modify the nuance of the noun without changing its grammatical category. A diminutive can express smallness, affection or attenuation, as in libricino. The altered form preserves the link with the base noun and connects well with the processes studied in Altered Noun Forms and Diminutives of Nouns.

Alcuni sostantivi cambiano genere a seconda della regione o del contesto d uso, e certi nomi astratti o di professione circolano spesso senza articolo nel parlato. Anche i plurali delle parole composte possono seguire schemi diversi e vanno verificati caso per caso. Queste variazioni non contraddicono le regole di base, ma mostrano la flessibilità del sistema nominale.

Some nouns change gender depending on region or context of use, and certain abstract or professional terms are often used without articles in speech. Also the plurals of compound words can follow different schemes and must be checked case by case. These variations do not contradict the basic rules, but show the flexibility of the nominal system.
