Countable nouns normally have a singular form and a plural form, because each referent can be counted as one or more elements. Uncountable nouns, instead, typically appear only in the singular, because they do not designate discrete units but a continuous or abstract whole. This opposition also influences agreement with adjectives, which follow the gender and number of the noun, as seen in Articles.

For an indefinite quantity of substance or matter, the partitive is often used, which conveys the idea of a part of a whole without specifying its measure. The most common forms are del, della, degli and delle, and they are chosen based on the gender and number of the noun that follows. This construction is essential when the uncountable noun is not measured with a precise unit, and it is particularly relevant in Partitive Article.

QuantitàQuantity

Quando un sostantivo non numerabile va reso più preciso, si usa un'unità di misura o un contenitore, come un chilo di, una tazza di o una bottiglia di. Nella lingua parlata e in contesti pratici, anche alcuni sostantivi non numerabili possono diventare conteggiabili, come un caffè o due birre, perché il referente è inteso come porzione o servizio. Questa elasticità dipende spesso dal registro e dall'uso quotidiano, e può variare anche per area geografica.

When a non-count noun needs to be made more precise, a unit of measure or a container is used, such as a kilo of, a cup of, or a bottle of. In spoken language and in practical contexts, even some uncountable nouns can become countable, such as a coffee or two beers, because the referent is understood as a portion or serving. This flexibility often depends on register and everyday use, and can also vary by geographical area.

QuantificatoriQuantifiers

I quantificatori permettono di esprimere quantità vaghe con sostantivi numerabili e non numerabili, ma non si comportano tutti allo stesso modo. Molto, poco e abbastanza possono accompagnare entrambi i tipi di sostantivo, mentre qualche e alcuni richiedono normalmente sostantivi numerabili e introducono rispettivamente una piccola quantità indeterminata o un gruppo limitato. La scelta del quantificatore dipende quindi dal modo in cui il nome presenta la quantità, non solo dal significato generale.

Quantifiers allow expressing vague quantities with countable and uncountable nouns, but not all behave the same way. Much and little express a generic quantity, and enough can accompany both noun types, while some and a few ordinarily require countable nouns and introduce respectively a small indeterminate quantity or a limited group. The choice of the quantifier thus depends on how the noun presents the quantity, not only on the general meaning.

AccordoAgreement

L'aggettivo concorda con il sostantivo in genere e numero, quindi cambia forma quando il nome passa dal singolare al plurale. Con i sostantivi numerabili l'accordo è particolarmente visibile, perché la variazione di numero del nome si riflette anche sugli elementi che lo accompagnano. Quando un nome viene usato in senso di massa o in senso conteggiato, l'accordo segue sempre il valore grammaticale della forma scelta.

The adjective agrees with the noun in gender and number, so it changes form when the noun moves from singular to plural. With countable nouns the agreement is particularly visible, because the variation in the noun's number is reflected also on the accompanying elements. When a noun is used in a mass sense or in a counted sense, agreement always follows the grammatical value of the chosen form.

Alcuni sostantivi di materia o astratti possono essere reinterpretati come unità conteggiabili quando indicano una porzione, un tipo o un singolo elemento del servizio. In questi casi la lingua usa un nome numerabile nuovo o una lettura numerabile del nome originario, come un caffè, una birra o un'acqua in bottiglia in uso regionale. Il significato dipende dal contesto concreto e dalla funzione comunicativa, non solo dalla forma del sostantivo.

Some nouns of substance or abstract nouns can be reinterpretated as countable units when they indicate a portion, a type, or a single item of the service. In these cases the language uses a new countable noun or a countable reading of the original noun, such as a coffee, a beer, or bottled water in regional usage. The meaning depends on the concrete context and the communicative function, not only on the form of the noun.

Non tutti i sostantivi seguono in modo regolare la distinzione tra singolare e plurale. Alcuni sono pluralia tantum e compaiono solo al plurale, mentre altri presentano forme irregolari di numero o cambi di significato che richiedono attenzione lessicale. Anche in questi casi, l'accordo e la scelta degli articoli seguono la forma realmente usata dal sostantivo, non il significato astratto che potrebbe avere in un altro contesto.

Not all nouns follow the distinction between singular and plural regularly. Some are pluralia tantum and appear only in the plural, while others present irregular plural forms or changes of meaning that require lexical attention. Even in these cases, agreement and article choice follow the form actually used by the noun, not the abstract meaning it might have in another context.
