La cita directa suele ir precedida por verbos de habla como decir, comentar, afirmar o preguntar. Estos verbos anuncian que lo importante viene después de los dos puntos y preparan al lector para reproducir las palabras exactas. La mayúscula inicial tras los dos puntos es frecuente cuando la cita abre una oración completa.

Direct quotation is usually preceded by speech verbs such as say, comment, affirm, or ask. These verbs announce that what follows after the colon is the exact words to reproduce, and capitalization after the colon is common when the quote begins a complete sentence.

Las citas se enmarcan con comillas, y en español se usan sobre todo las angulares, las dobles y las simples. En Latinoamérica es muy frecuente el uso de comillas dobles, mientras que las angulares son habituales en muchos textos editados. Las comillas simples se reservan con frecuencia para una cita dentro de otra cita.

Quotations are framed with quotation marks, and in English the common marks include single quotes, double quotes, and nested quotes. The use of double quotes is standard in many regions, while other traditions may favor guillemets for outer quotes. Single quotes are often reserved for an inner quote.

Los signos de interrogación y exclamación se mantienen dentro de la cita cuando forman parte del texto reproducido. Los puntos suspensivos indican omisiones o cortes dentro de una cita y deben respetar la intención del fragmento original. La forma interrogativa o negativa se conserva exactamente como fue pronunciada o escrita.

Question marks and exclamation points are kept inside the quotation when they are part of the reproduced text. Ellipses indicate omissions or cuts within a quotation and should respect the intention of the original fragment. The interrogative or negative form is preserved exactly as spoken or written.

En el diálogo, la raya larga abre cada intervención y permite distinguir con claridad cada turno de palabra. Este formato es muy usado en narración y teatro, aunque su frecuencia puede variar entre España y distintos países latinoamericanos. Cuando el diálogo alterna intervenciones, cada cambio de hablante vuelve a empezar con raya.

In dialogue, the em dash opens each intervention and keeps track of each turn. This format is widely used in narration and drama, though its use may vary between Spain and different Latin American countries. When dialogue alternates, every change of speaker starts again with a dash.

Cuando una cita contiene otra cita, la segunda debe distinguirse con un tipo de comillas diferente. Esta alternancia evita confusiones y permite reconocer con claridad qué palabras pertenecen a cada nivel de reproducción textual. El texto citado interior conserva también su forma exacta, incluidas preguntas y negaciones.

When a quotation contains another quotation, the second should be distinguished with a different type of quotation marks. This alternation avoids confusion and allows clear recognition of which words belong to each level of textual reproduction. The quoted text inside also preserves its exact form, including questions and negations.
