Prerequisites

Indirect speech is used when you tell what another person said, asked, or requested without repeating their exact words. Instead of opening a literal quote, you summarize the content from your point of view: Juan dijo que venía tarde. It helps to integrate the information into a narration, to order multiple voices in the same text, and to soften the tone when it is not necessary to reproduce the original sentence. It also appears frequently in news, conversations, and summaries, where the message is more important than the exact words. If you want to compare this form with the literal quotation, it is useful to review Direct Style.

The introductory verb marks the type of message that follows. Decir presents general information: Marta dijo que estaba cansada. Preguntar introduces a doubt or a request for information: Le preguntó si tenía tiempo. Responder shows a reaction to the above: Respondió que no podía ir. Explicar adds a developed idea or a cause: Explicó que había perdido el tren. Also common are afirmar, avisar, contar, prometer and sugerir. The chosen verb guides the listener on the intention of the message before reading the indirect content.

In indirect speech, the pronouns change to fit the new speaker. Yo becomes the person who is now telling the story: Dijo que yo no podía entrar if the original sentence was addressed to you, or Dijo que él no podía entrar if it was about someone else. changes depending on who the recipient is in the narrative: me dijo que estaba ocupado. Nosotros can stay the same or become ellos if the group no longer includes the narrator: Comentaron que nosotros salíamos temprano or Comentaron que ellos salían temprano. The key is to preserve the correct perspective within the sentence, not to copy the original persons automatically.

Imperfect to backshift tenses
Idea
👤Cambia yo por la persona que habla dentro del nuevo relato.
🧩Cambia por la persona a la que se refiere el mensaje narrado.
👥Cambia nosotros por el grupo correcto del nuevo contexto.
🎩Ajusta los posesivos para que la referencia siga clara.

When the introductory verb is in the past, the verb in the indirect quote usually shifts back a tense. Tengo hambre becomes dijo que tenía hambre, he terminado becomes dijo que había terminado, and iré becomes dijo que iría. This shift places the content as prior or separate from the moment of original speech. If the information remains true or current, the tense may stay the same: El profesor dijo que la Tierra gira alrededor del Sol. It also holds when talking about permanent facts, laws, schedules, or general truths. On the other hand, if the idea depends on a specific moment, the tense backshift is usually necessary.

A direct question becomes an indirect structure without swapping subject and verb. ¿Dónde vives? becomes me preguntó dónde vivía. ¿Vienes mañana? becomes me preguntó si venía al día siguiente. Yes-or-no questions usually use si; information questions use the corresponding interrogative word: qué, quién, cuándo, dónde, cómo, cuánto. Directives and requests are not repeated as imperatives in indirect style. They are expressed with verbs like pedir, decir, rogar, mandar or recomendar + que + subjunctive: Me pidió que cerrara la puerta. This makes the message sound more natural and less blunt than a literal command.

When moving from direct to indirect style, the time and place markers adjust to the new point of view. Aquí often becomes allí or ahí. Ahora becomes entonces. Hoy changes to ese día. Ayer becomes el día anterior and mañana becomes al día siguiente. Expressions like esta semana, la semana pasada or la semana que viene also change according to the temporal distance from the moment of recounting. In colloquial speech, some changes may be omitted if the context makes the meaning clear, especially when the referent remains evident. Still, the safest form in narration is to adapt these markers to the new temporal frame.

Direct vs. indirect speech
Idea
📍Cambia aquí por un lugar más alejado del nuevo relato.
⏰Cambia ahora por un momento posterior o más lejano.
🌧️Cambia ayer por la referencia temporal adecuada del relato.
🚀Cambia mañana por la referencia futura correspondiente.

Direct speech preserves the original voice and gives more prominence to the exact words. Ana dijo: “No quiero ir” maintains the impact of the phrase as it was spoken. Indirect speech summarizes and organizes the information better: Ana dijo que no quería ir. It is appropriate to use direct when tone, emotion, surprise, or the exact formulation matter. It is appropriate to use indirect when it is important to integrate the content into a narrative, avoid repetition, or align multiple voices in the same text. A common error is to copy the original phrase literally inside indirect style, without changing persons, tenses, or markers. If the quotation no longer appears within quotation marks, the sentence must adapt to the new grammatical frame.
