Personal pronouns refer to people or things. In the nominative, they are often the subject of the sentence. They indicate which person is meant and whether it is singular or plural.
Die Grundformen der Personalpronomen im Nominativ sind fest. Sie gehören zur ersten, zweiten oder dritten Person. Einige Formen unterscheiden auch das grammatische Geschlecht.
The base forms of personal pronouns in the nominative are fixed. They belong to the first, second, or third person. Some forms also distinguish the grammatical gender.

Die erste Person meint die sprechende Person oder eine Gruppe mit der sprechenden Person. Die zweite Person meint die angesprochene Person oder Gruppe. Die dritte Person meint andere Personen oder Dinge.

Sie kann zwei Funktionen haben. Sie kann ein höfliches Personalpronomen für eine angesprochene Person oder für mehrere angesprochene Personen sein. Sie kann auch die Form der dritten Person Plural sein; im Höflichkeitsgebrauch schreibt man Sie groß.
Sie can have two functions. It can be the polite personal pronoun for the person or people being addressed. It can also take the form of the third person plural; in polite usage it is capitalized.

Im Deutschen gibt es eine informelle und eine höfliche Anrede. Du und ihr sind informell. Sie ist höflich; welche Form passt, hängt vom Kontext und von der Beziehung zwischen den Personen ab.
