This indicates what is close to the speaker. That indicates what is far from the speaker and often also from the listener. Codesto traditionally indicates what is near the listener, but today it has a limited use and is not common in many situations.

Il pronome dimostrativo sostituisce il nome. L’aggettivo dimostrativo accompagna il nome espresso. La forma può essere uguale, ma la funzione è diversa: nel pronome il nome non appare, nell’aggettivo sì.
