What with a noun
The structure ¡Qué! + sustantivo expresses surprise, admiration or appraisal about a person, a thing or a situation. The noun can go alone or accompanied by an adjective: ¡Qué casa! , ¡Qué idea tan buena! , ¡Qué noche más fría!. The emotion rests on the noun and what it represents. In a restaurant, ¡Qué café! communicates that the coffee draws attention for its flavor, its size or its quality. In this form, qué does not ask; it presents the speaker's reaction to the noun, just as happens with some interjections of Interjecciones Básicas.

What with an adjective
With ¡Qué! + adjetivo, the exclamation emphasizes a quality. The adjective describes a person, an object or a situation with more force than normal: ¡Qué bonito! , ¡Qué rápido! , ¡Qué difícil! . Here the focus is not on the noun, but on the trait that is intensified. If someone shows a photo and you say ¡Qué grande!, the word expresses the impression produced by the size. This form is used to react immediately, without needing to explain more. Against a Oraciones Interrogativas, here you are not seeking information; you express emotion about a quality already known or visible.

What with an adverb
The combination ¡Qué! + adverbio highlights the way something occurs. The adverb can express speed, frequency, intensity or ease: ¡Qué rápido!, ¡Qué lejos!, ¡Qué bien! . The exclamation comments on how an action develops or how a situation is perceived. For example, when you see someone finish a task ahead of time, ¡Qué rápido! shows surprise at the speed. If a meal comes out perfectly, ¡Qué bien! evaluates the result. The adverb retains its usual function, but the intonation makes it an emotional reaction.

How with a verb
With ¡Cómo! + verbo, the exclamation focuses on the action itself or on the way of acting. The word cómo does not introduce a question here; it opens an intense reaction: ¡Cómo corre!, ¡Cómo canta!, ¡Cómo trabaja!. The verb appears conjugated and expresses what the person or thing does. This structure works well when the speaker wants to emphasize that the action impresses by its force, speed or style. If you see a child jumping non-stop, ¡Cómo salta! communicates admiration or astonishment for that action.

How much and its forms
¡Cuánto, cuánta, cuántos y cuántas! express quantity, measure or degree. The form changes to agree with the noun: ¡Cuánto ruido!, ¡Cuánta paciencia!, ¡Cuántos libros!, ¡Cuántas personas!. When a noun does not appear, the form can accompany a verb and signal intensity: ¡Cuánto trabaja!, ¡Cuánto llueve!. These exclamations serve to show abundance, excess or strong valuation. In ¡Cuántas ganas!, the speaker highlights the strength of that wish. The agreement with the noun follows the same gender and number rules as in other parts of Spanish.

Flexible exclamatory word order
In exclamatives, the word order can vary more than in a neutral sentence, but the structure still marks the emotion. You can say ¡Qué casa tan bonita! or ¡Tan bonita qué casa!, though the first form is natural and clearest. There are also changes to give more emphasis to a particular part: ¡Qué bien cantas! versus ¡Cantas qué bien! . The choice depends on the emotional focus, not on a question rule. Spanish preserves the main meaning thanks to intonation and exclamatory elements, not only because of the word order. To compare this behavior with other structures, it is useful to review Orden de palabras.
| Usage | Explanation | |
|---|---|---|
| Se usa para destacar una cualidad cuando el hablante quiere dar más fuerza emocional a lo que describe. | ||
| Se usa para poner la sorpresa sobre el nombre cuando ese elemento es el centro de la reacción. | ||
| Se usa para resaltar el verbo cuando lo importante es la acción o la forma de hacerla. |
Subject and verb omitted
Many exclamatives omit the subject or even the verb when the context already makes them obvious. In ¡Qué bonito! there is no need to say what is nice; the situation shows it. In ¡Qué tarde! there is no verb either, because the reaction is understood from the moment. Short responses like ¡Qué raro! or ¡Cuántas flores! are also common. These forms feel very natural in quick conversations, because the emotion does not require a full sentence to be clear. The omission works only when the listener can identify the referent from the immediate context.

Signs and intonation
Exclamations are recognized by the exclamation marks and by the intonation. In written Spanish, the signs ¡ ! announce from the start that the phrase carries emotion, surprise, anger, admiration or enthusiasm. In speech, the exclamation usually has more height, more energy or more contrast than a normal sentence. Without those signs and without that intonation, qué bonito or cuánto tiempo can seem like incomplete fragments or even misinterpreted questions. Therefore, the written form and the spoken form work together to signal that the speaker is not informing or asking, but reacting with intensity.
