Yes-or-no questions seek confirmation about information that is already possible. The answer is usually yes, no, maybe or a short phrase: Did Ana come?; Do you have time?; Are the stores closed?.

The base is the same as in a simple sentence: subject + verb + object. The main difference is the interrogative intonation and the question marks, as shown in Punctuation. In writing, the sentence ends with ?; when speaking, the voice rises at the end. The word order can stay the same as in an affirmative: María llega hoy¿María llega hoy?

Formation of Yes/no Questions
Idea
🎉In these questions, the interrogative intonation signals that you expect an affirmative or negative answer.
🎨The basic word order is usually kept when you convert a statement into a direct question.
🍦The question can sound natural even if the subject is implicit if it’s already understood from the context.

When the question seeks a specific data point, a question word appears at the beginning: qué, quién, cuál and cuándo. That word takes the place of the missing information: ¿Qué quieres?; ¿Quién llama?; ¿Cuál prefieres?; ¿Cuándo sale el tren?.

Qué asks for identity, definition or general information. Quién asks about a person. Cuál selects among options or asks for identification within a group. Cuándo asks about the moment. These forms function as Interrogative Pronouns and appear in direct questions, where the interrogative word goes at the beginning of the sentence.

Use of basic interrogatives

🧳Quién is used to ask about people.
🥄Cuál is used to choose or identify among options.
🛸Cuándo is used to ask about time.

In a direct question, the verb usually goes before the subject or very close to it: ¿Viene tu hermana?; ¿Ha terminado el trabajo Carlos?; ¿Qué dice la carta?. This order makes the sentence sound interrogative without changing the verbal content.

The subject can be omitted when it is already understood from the form of the verb: ¿Vienes mañana?; ¿Trabaja en Madrid?; ¿Tienen hambre?. In Spanish, the verb already indicates the person in many cases, so the subject is not always necessary. Compared to the typical word order in an affirmative Word Order, the question places the verb in a more visible position to mark the query.

Verb order in direct questions
Idea
🎵In direct questions, the verb usually moves toward the beginning of the sentence.
🌂The subject may come after the verb when the question sounds more natural that way.
👩‍🚀The subject may be omitted if it is already clear from the verb form.

Some questions require a preposition in front of the interrogative word: ¿de quién?, ¿a dónde?, ¿con qué?, ¿para quién?. The preposition does not disappear; it stays attached to the interrogative word and forms a single expression.

The structure is preposition + interrogative word + verb + rest of the sentence: ¿De quién es este abrigo?; ¿A dónde vas?; ¿Con qué abriste la caja?. The preposition depends on the verb or the relationship being asked about. That is why we say ¿de qué hablas?, but ¿con quién hablas?. In direct questions, the preposition always goes before the interrogative word.

Questions with fixed prepositions
Idea
🚲When the idea requires it, the preposition remains next to the interrogative word.
👢The combination a dónde is used to ask about destination or direction.
⭐The combination con qué is used to ask about an instrument or company.

Indirect questions do not carry question marks because they are not complete independent questions. They appear inside another sentence, usually after verbs like saber, preguntar, decir or no entender: No sé qué quieres; Preguntó dónde vive; Explícame quién llamó.

The interrogative word keeps appearing, but the sentence changes to a subordinate structure. The word order is usually closer to that of an affirmative than a direct question, as in Subordinate Clauses. Do not write ¿ or ? because the doubt or query depends on another main sentence.

Construction of indirect questions
Idea
🐒Indirect questions go without question marks when they depend on another verb.
🍬In these structures, the interrogative word introduces the doubt or the information being sought.
🚿Verbs such as saber and preguntar often introduce this type of question.

A rhetorical question uses an interrogative form, but does not seek an answer. It serves to express surprise, complaint, reproach, admiration or intensity: ¿Y ahora qué hacemos?; ¿Quién no lo sabe?; ¿Cómo voy a olvidarlo?.

The speaker formulates the question to provoke an effect on the listener, not to receive information. Sometimes the answer is already implied by the situation. It can also be used to add emphasis to a statement: ¿No te lo dije? can sound like reproach and not like a real query. The communicative intent changes more than the form, so intonation and context are decisive.

Expressive uses of the question
UsageExplanation
🎷SurpriseIt is used to show astonishment when the question expresses impact more than a real doubt.
🐢EmphasisIt is used to reinforce an idea and give it more emotional force in the message.
🦆Light ReproachIt is used to call attention to something obvious with a playful or critical tone.
