Start with the numbers that appear in everyday life: zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. Then come eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen and twenty. With them you can count objects, say your age or understand a simple quantity in a store. When you see a list of products, a table with chairs, or a page with exercises, identify first the digit and then say the number out loud. If the number appears before a noun, the meaning is usually that of quantity, as in three books or twenty euros. To listen to and say quantities more easily, it is also worthwhile to know the Nominal Number, because many numbers function as nouns in expressions of quantity.

The most useful tens are twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty and ninety. To form numbers between 21 and 99, join the ten with the unit: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three; then thirty-one, forty-five, sixty-eight. In writing, the connection between ten and unit changes depending on the form of the number, but the idea is always the same: first the ten, then the unit. This way you can read prices like thirty-two euros, ages like twenty-seven years, or quantities like eighty-four people. These forms also serve for the Numeral Adjectives and for the Numeral Pronouns, because the numeric base is the same.

Formation of tens and quantities
Idea
🍬The decena diez serves as the base to build many new quantities.
🧩To say a larger quantity, the unit is added after the tens.
🍪Treinta starts the series of tens and helps to keep counting.
🎈Cuarenta is useful when you count big things and many at once.
✏️Cincuenta marks another important ten in the count.
🕰️Sesenta appears a lot in clocks, ages and long quantities.
🐉Setenta can sound solemn, but it’s still just another ten.
🧦Ochenta is used for large and round quantities.
🍃Noventa closes the staircase before reaching one hundred.

Numbers appear in very concrete phrases: it costs fifteen euros, the menu costs twelve euros, I am twenty-five years old, call me at six seven eight…. In prices, the number is usually next to the currency; in age, it goes with years; in phones, each digit is spoken separately. When you see a quantity written in digits, like 18 or 47, you can convert it into words and say it naturally. When you find it written with letters, like dieciocho or cuarenta y siete, you can read it without stopping. In shopping lists, in a reservation, or in a sale sign, recognizing whether the number indicates price, quantity, age, or a phone number helps avoid confusion and lets you respond with a complete sentence.

Dates use numbers to indicate day, year, and sometimes floor or door in an address. You can read el 3 de mayo, el 12 de octubre or 2026 without separating each part in the same way. In an address, the number usually indicates the house, building, or floor: calle Mayor 14, avenida Central 8, tercero derecha. Notices also mix numbers and words: rebajas del 50%, plaza 2, puerta 7, entrada a las 19:30. In these contexts, the number not only counts; it organizes practical information. That is why it helps to pay attention to the accompanying word to know whether it indicates date, place, time, or price. When later forms that function as Numeral Adjectives appear, you’ll see that many of these combinations follow the same order.

Reading numbers in everyday notices
Idea
📅In a date, the day number is read as ordinal or cardinal depending on context.
🏠In an address, the number identifies the exact place.
📣In a notice, numbers draw attention to a time or a date.
🏢When you see a floor or level, the number indicates level or location.
🚪On a door, the number serves to find a room.
🚦On a sign, the number can mark speed, distance or limit.
📋In a list, the numbers help to follow the order.
🗓️In a long date, day, month and year are said clearly.

When saying numbers, pronounce each syllable clearly: dieciséis, diecisiete, dieciocho, diecinueve and veintidós usually require more attention than uno or diez. In slow conversation, listen to the full word and not just the first part. In real speech, a person may say a string of digits quickly, especially in phones, codes, schedules or addresses. If you hear treinta y seis, mentally separate the ten from the unit; if you hear ciento veinte, first look for the larger part. In some places there are slight differences in rhythm or pronunciation, but the structure of the number remains the same. Practicing aloud and with attentive listening prepares you to understand numbers when they appear isolated or inside sentences with Numeral Pronouns.
