Tener and haber impersonal
For existence, Spanish uses haber impersonal, not tener. You say hay una mesa, hay muchas personas, había ruido, hubo un problema. Tener is not used in that sense. Tengo una mesa means that the table belongs to someone or is under their control; hay una mesa only says that the table exists or is present. The difference is clear between possession with tener and existence with haber impersonal.
