Function
Adverbs of place indicate where an action occurs, where something is located, or in which direction movement is oriented. They express proximity, distance, or spatial relation with respect to the speaker, as also occurs with the placement of adverbs in Placement of adverbs. They usually modify the verb and, in some cases, the entire sentence to situate the scene precisely.
Proximity
Here and acá indicate proximity to the speaker, although acá is more common in many areas of Latin America. Near expresses physical or relative proximity and can appear as an adverb or function in constructions with de. Very near intensifies the closeness and maintains the adverbial value.
| IdeaIdea | EjemploExample | |
|---|---|---|
| Aquí y acá señalan proximidad al hablante.Here and acá indicate proximity to the speaker. | ||
| Acá se usa más en muchas variedades de Latinoamérica.Acá is more commonly used in many varieties of Latin America. | ||
| Cerca expresa proximidad espacial.Near expresses spatial proximity. | ||
| Muy cerca intensifica la proximidad.Very near intensifies proximity. |
Distance
There indicates an intermediate position, while allí and allá indicate relative distance from the speaker. Far expresses a great distance and can be combined with de to specify the reference point. The choice depends on how space is organized in relation to the speaker.
| IdeaIdea | EjemploExample | |
|---|---|---|
| Ahí señala una posición intermedia.There indicates an intermediate position. | ||
| Allí y allá indican lejanía relativa.There and allá indicate relative distance. | ||
| Lejos expresa gran distancia.Far expresses a great distance. | ||
| Lejos puede combinarse con de para precisar referencia.Far can be combined with de to specify reference. |
Relation
Above and below express vertical position, in front of and behind indicate frontal or posterior relation, and inside and outside mark interior and exterior. These relations describe the location of an object or person relative to another element and allow space to be organized clearly. The choice of each form depends on the reference point taken in the sentence.
| IdeaIdea | EjemploExample | |
|---|---|---|
| Encima expresa posición superior.Above expresses a superior position. | ||
| Debajo expresa posición inferior.Below expresses a lower position. | ||
| Delante indica posición frontal.In front indicates a frontal position. | ||
| Detrás indica posición posterior.Behind indicates a posterior position. | ||
| Dentro indica interior.Inside indicates interior. | ||
| Fuera indica exterior.Outside indicates exterior. |
Placement
Adverbs of place usually go after the verb, although they can also appear at the beginning of the sentence to emphasize the location. In constructions with de, such as near and far from, the adverb maintains its spatial value and specifies the referent. In colloquial use in some regions, the preposition can be omitted with known places, as in estoy casa, though this form is regional and not general.
| IdeaIdea | EjemploExample | |
|---|---|---|
| Suelen ir detrás del verbo.They usually go after the verb. | ||
| Pueden ir al inicio para dar énfasis.They can go at the beginning to add emphasis. | ||
| Cerca de precisa una referencia cercana.Near expresses a close reference. | ||
| Lejos de precisa una referencia distante.Far expresses a distant reference. | ||
| En algunos usos coloquiales se omite la preposición.In some colloquial uses the preposition is omitted. |
Closure
Here, there, there and over there order distance with respect to the speaker; near and far express proximity or separation; above, below, in front of, behind, inside and outside place objects in space. Their value depends on the reference point and their position in the sentence. Mastery of these forms enables describing places with precision and naturalness.
