Direct questions become subordinate interrogatives introduced by 'if' or by an interrogative adverb such as where, when, how, or why. In this transition, the final question mark is not preserved, because the interrogative function is carried by the subordinate clause itself. Nel discorso indiretto cambiano i riferimenti temporali, spaziali e personali, perché il centro deittico si sposta dal parlante originale al narratore che riferisce. I dimostrativi, gli avverbi di tempo e i pronomi vengono adattati per mantenere coerenza con questo nuovo punto di vista. Anche la negazione resta interna alla subordinata e si colloca davanti al verbo quando richiesto dalla struttura della frase.

In indirect speech, temporal, spatial and personal references change, because the deictic center shifts from the original speaker to the narrator who reports. Demonstratives, time adverbs, and pronouns are adjusted to maintain coherence with this new point of view. Negation also remains within the subordinate clause and is placed before the verb when required by the sentence structure.
