Everyday Money
In French, l’argent is used to talk about what we pay, what we receive, and what we keep for later. We say gagner de l’argent, dépenser de l’argent, économiser de l’argent and avoir de l’argent sur soi. In everyday life, we also talk about budget, revenus and dépenses. When we organize our groceries, our rent or a meal at a restaurant, these words come up often. For the vocabulary of everyday purchases, see also Les Courses.

Cash and Currency
The espèces are the cash money. They include the billets and the pièces. A billet is used for larger amounts, a pièce for smaller amounts. Payment Methods
An moyen de paiement is the way to settle a sum. The most common are the carte bancaire, the virement, the chèque, the espèces and contactless payment. With a carte bancaire, one pays directly or withdraws money. A virement transfers money from one account to another. The chèque is still used in certain situations, especially administrative or between individuals. The payment sans contact allows payment by bringing the card or phone near the terminal.

In everyday language, one says ça coûte combien ? to ask the price. Je n’ai pas un sou expresses a lack of money. Être à découvert means the bank account is in the negative. Avoir du mal à joindre les deux bouts describes a period where one lives with little margin. C’est hors de prix refers to a too-high amount. Mettre la main au portefeuille means to pay. Être fauché means to be short of money.
Slang and Everyday Register
In a familiar register, le fric means money. Les sous is also very common, especially for talking about small sums or in a simple, familiar way. One can say j’ai plus de sous or je n’ai pas de fric. In a more neutral or administrative style, one prefers espèces, argent liquide or moyens de paiement. The choice of word changes depending on the situation, the person one is speaking to and the expected level of language.
