Qué es

El gerundio verbal expresa una acción en desarrollo o una acción que ocurre al mismo tiempo que otra. En español, su uso es limitado y depende de la construcción. No suele funcionar como en otras lenguas, y algunas formas son más naturales que otras según la situación.

The verbal gerund expresses an action in progress or an action that occurs at the same time as another. In Spanish, its use is limited and depends on the construction. It does not usually function like in other languages, and some forms are more natural than others depending on the situation.

Formas regulares

El gerundio se forma desde el infinitivo. Los verbos en -ar terminan en -ando, y los verbos en -er y -ir terminan en -iendo.

The gerund is formed from the infinitive. Verbs ending in -ar end in -ando, and verbs ending in -er and -ir end in -iendo.

Formas irregulares

Algunos verbos tienen cambios en el gerundio. A veces cambia una vocal, y a veces aparece y en lugar de i. Estos cambios son frecuentes y forman parte del uso normal.

Some verbs have changes in the gerund. Sometimes a vowel changes, and sometimes a y appears in place of i. These changes are common and are part of normal usage.

Estar + gerundio

La perífrasis estar + gerundio expresa una acción en curso en un momento concreto. Presenta la acción como empezada y no terminada. Es una construcción muy frecuente en español.

The be + gerund periphrasis expresses an action in progress at a specific moment. It presents the action as started and not finished. It is a very common construction in Spanish.

Simultaneidad

El gerundio también puede indicar que dos acciones ocurren al mismo tiempo. En este uso, el gerundio se relaciona con el verbo principal y añade una acción simultánea. Normalmente el sujeto de las dos acciones es el mismo.

The gerund can also indicate that two actions occur at the same time. In this use, the gerund relates to the main verb and adds a simultaneous action. Usually the subject of the two actions is the same.

Otras perífrasis

El gerundio aparece en otras perífrasis verbales frecuentes. Estas construcciones añaden ideas como continuidad, avance gradual o repetición. Algunas se usan más en unas regiones o contextos que en otros.
