Qué es

El estilo directo presenta las palabras o los pensamientos de una persona como aparecen en la cita. Se diferencia de la narración porque conserva la forma original del mensaje. En una narración, el hablante cuenta el hecho con sus propias palabras.

Direct style presents the words or thoughts of a person as they appear in the quotation. It differs from narration because it preserves the original form of the message. In narration, the speaker recounts the fact in their own words.

Cita literal

Para una cita literal, se usan comillas para marcar el inicio y el final de las palabras citadas. Así, el lector distingue con claridad la voz del narrador y la voz citada. En muchos textos también aparece un verbo de habla antes o después de la cita.

For a direct quotation, quotation marks are used to mark the beginning and end of the quoted words. In this way, the reader clearly distinguishes the narrator's voice from the quoted voice. In many texts, a speech verb also appears before or after the quotation.

Verbos de habla

Speech verbs introduce or accompany direct speech. Common verbs are say, ask, answer, and add. They can also introduce thoughts in some contexts, such as think or wonder.

Puntuación básica

La puntuación en estilo directo ayuda a leer la cita con claridad. Es frecuente usar dos puntos antes de la cita cuando el verbo de habla va primero. También puede aparecer una coma u otros signos según el tipo de texto, la editorial o el país.

Punctuation in direct style helps read the quotation clearly. It is common to use a colon before the quotation when the speech verb comes first. A comma or other marks may also appear depending on the text type, the publisher, or the country.

Diálogo breve

En diálogos breves, cada intervención citada se presenta de forma separada para mostrar quién habla. Si se usan comillas, cada cita conserva sus propios signos. En otros textos, especialmente narrativos, también se puede usar raya de diálogo en lugar de comillas.

In brief dialogues, each quoted utterance is presented separately to show who speaks. If quotation marks are used, each quotation preserves its own punctuation. In other texts, especially narrative ones, a dialogue dash can also be used instead of quotation marks.
