Palavras homófonas e heterógrafas são palavras que podem ter a mesma pronúncia, mas têm grafias e sentidos diferentes. Homophonic and heterographic words are words that may have the same pronunciation but have different spellings and meanings. A homofonia em português não é fixa em todo o espaço lusófono. Certas palavras soam iguais em algumas regiões e mantêm diferença audível em outras. Por isso, é mais correto falar em homofonia frequente ou possível, e não em igualdade absoluta para todos os falantes.
