The simplest negation frames the conjugated verb with ne ... pas. The subject stays in first place, then comes ne, then the verb, then pas. In an affirmative sentence, we say I speak French. In the negative form, we say I do not speak French. With a verb of only one word, it is that conjugated verb which is surrounded by the negation. After Affirmations, this structure is used to say that an action does not take place, that an idea is not true, or that a preference is refused.

Simple framing of negation
Idea
🍰Place ne before the conjugated verb and pas after the verb to form the standard negation.
🎤In formal spoken language, one often keeps ne in the negative sentence.

Other negation words replace pas to give a more precise meaning. Never expresses absence in time: I never travel in winter. No longer indicates the end or cessation: He no longer works here. Nothing replaces a thing: I see nothing. Nobody replaces a person: I don’t know anyone. The negative word remains paired with ne and sits close to the verb, just like pas in the base negation. The choice of word depends on the idea to negate, not on the sentence structure.

With ne ... que, the sentence does not negate entirely. It limits to only one thing, one person, or one moment. Que here means only. I don’t drink anything but water means water is the only drink. We don’t go out except on Saturdays means Saturday is the only day to go out. The structure keeps the negation form, but the meaning is restrictive, not negative. It is used when you want to exclude all other possibilities except one.

Restriction expressed by ne que
Idea
🥞The expression ne que means only and does not mark a total negation.
✨With ne que, the word que remains stuck to the verb or the complement it limits.

In a compound tense, the negation frames the auxiliary and not the past participle. Place ne before the auxiliary, then pas after it. With the passé composé, we say Je n’ai pas mangé and not Je ne mangé pas. The past participle stays after the second part of the negation. The same order appears with other compound tenses: Elle n’avait rien compris, Ils ne sont jamais venus. The structure thus follows auxiliary + negation word + past participle.

Placement of negation in the passé composé
Idea
🫖In a compound tense, ne is placed before the auxiliary and pas after it.
🍇With rien, jamais or personne, the negation also frames the auxiliary or the participle depending on the structure.

When a verb is followed by an infinitive, the negation is placed around the infinitive and not around the first verb. I want to eat becomes I do not want to eat. He prefers to leave becomes He prefers not to leave. The first verb keeps its normal place, then comes the infinitive framed by ne ... pas when the negative idea concerns the action of the infinitive. With modal verbs and verbs of intention, this placement is the one that allows negating the expected action.

Negation before an infinitive
Idea
🏃With two verbs, ne pas goes before the infinitive.
🦉When the first verb is already conjugated, the negation stays attached to the second verb in the infinitive.

Object pronouns sit before the verb, even when the sentence is negative. We say I see it, then I do not see it. We say She knows me, then She does not know me. The pronoun stays glued to the verb, and the negation frames it with the conjugated verb. In a sentence with several elements, the order remains fixed: subject + ne + object pronoun + verb + pas. This position agrees with Word order and remains the same in most negative sentences.

Order of objects pronouns in negation
Idea
🧺Object pronouns are placed before the verb even in a negative sentence.
😴With an infinitive, the pronoun remains in front of the infinitive and the negation frames it.

In a question, the negation keeps its form, but the word order depends on the type of question. With inversion, ne follows the subject and pas stays after the verb: Ne vient-il pas ? or N’a-t-elle rien vu ?. With a question introduced by an interrogative expression, the negation inserts into the normal structure: Pourquoi ne viens-tu pas ? or Que ne comprends-tu pas ?. The choice depends on Interrogation: negation does not change the interrogative meaning, it adapts to the form of the question.

Negation in interrogative forms
Idea
🦙With inversion, ne stays before the verb and pas follows the conjugated verb.
🧺In an informal question, one may keep the usual order of negation without inversion.
💃When the question concerns a partial negation, the negative words keep their normal place.

In speech and in quick exchanges, a negative answer can be very brief. To Tu viens ?, we answer Non or Pas. To Tu aimes le café ?, one can say Pas vraiment or Non. When a negative sentence repeats the same idea as the other person, we often say Moi non plus : Je n’ai pas faim. Moi non plus. The short answer depends on the link with the question or with the preceding statement, and it avoids repeating the whole sentence.

In informal speech, ne often disappears before the verb: Je sais pas, Il vient pas, On comprend rien. The audible negation then rests mostly on the second element, such as pas, jamais, rien or personne. This form appears in rapid language, in conversations, among close people and in informal situations. In careful written form, in complete replies and in more formal registers, the form with ne remains the standard. With Punctuation, writing also preserves the negation structure more clearly.
