Practical Applications
Music and culture
The music is part of daily life in many Spanish-speaking countries. It is heard at home, on the street, at parties and celebrations. To talk about this topic, words like canción, artista, grupo and concierto are useful. It also uses cantante for the person who sings and fan for someone who follows an artist. When you talk about tastes, use structures like me gusta + sustantivo or me gusta + infinitivo. You can say me gusta la música or me gusta escuchar música.
Music also appears together with other cultural activities. A concert can come after a dinner, a party or an outing with friends. If you want to expand the vocabulary related to leisure activities, Creative Hobbies provides a lot of context for talking about plans, art and free time.
Common musical genres
Musical genres help to say what kind of sound you prefer or what tends to sound in a place. Some of the most common are pop, rock, reggaetón, rap, jazz, salsa, bachata, merengue, música clásica and electrónica. Each one is used as a noun: escucho pop, me gusta el rock, pon música electrónica.
In normal conversations, the genre tends to appear after verbs like escuchar, poner, preferir and gustar. You can also say una canción de salsa or un grupo de rock. In many contexts, latino or latina describes the musical style and its connection with rhythms from Latin America. If the conversation is about group activities, Team Sports offers another common vocabulary field for shared plans and social environments.
