Idea general

La concordancia sujeto-verbo es la relación entre el sujeto y el verbo. El verbo cambia para coincidir con el sujeto en número y persona. Número puede ser singular o plural. Persona puede ser primera, segunda o tercera.

Subject-verb agreement is the relationship between the subject and the verb. The verb changes to match the subject in number and person. Number can be singular or plural. Person can be first, second, or third.

Número

Si el sujeto es singular, el verbo va en singular. Si el sujeto es plural, el verbo va en plural. Para decidirlo, primero identificas quién hace la acción o de quién se dice algo.

If the subject is singular, the verb is singular. If the subject is plural, the verb is plural. To decide it, you first identify who performs the action or about whom something is said.

Persona

La persona del sujeto también cambia la forma verbal. Primera persona incluye a quien habla. Segunda persona incluye a quien escucha. Tercera persona incluye a otras personas o cosas.

The person of the subject also changes the verbal form. First person includes the one who speaks. Second person includes the one who listens. Third person includes other people or things.

Sujeto compuesto

Cuando dos sujetos se unen con y, normalmente forman un sujeto plural y el verbo va en plural. Esto pasa aunque cada parte sea singular. La concordancia sigue el conjunto completo del sujeto.

When two subjects are joined with and, they normally form a plural subject and the verb goes in plural. This happens even if each part is singular. The agreement follows the complete subject.

Sujeto pospuesto

A veces el sujeto aparece después del verbo. En ese caso, el verbo debe concordar con ese sujeto aunque no esté antes. Para elegir la forma correcta, buscas el sujeto real y no la palabra más cercana.

Sometimes the subject appears after the verb. In that case, the verb must agree with that subject even if it is not before it. To choose the correct form, you look for the real subject and not the nearest word.

Colectivos

Los sujetos colectivos tienen forma singular, pero hablan de un grupo. En general, el verbo va en singular cuando el colectivo se presenta como una unidad. En algunos usos, puede aparecer plural si el hablante piensa en las personas del grupo. Esta variación existe y no siempre se valora igual en todas las zonas.

Collective nouns have singular form, but they refer to a group. In general, the verb is singular when the collective is presented as a unit. In some uses, it may appear plural if the speaker thinks of the individuals in the group. This variation exists and is not always valued equally across regions.

In some constructions, especially with de and more than one plural noun, plural may also appear when the focus is on the set of elements.
