Sílaba tónicaStressed syllable.

Toda palabra de más de una sílaba tiene una sílaba más fuerte que las demás. Esa sílaba tónica permite clasificar la palabra en aguda, llana, esdrújula o sobresdrújula. Reconocerla correctamente es la base para aplicar cualquier regla de tilde.

Every word with more than one syllable has one syllable stronger than the others. That stressed syllable allows classifying the word as aguda, llana, esdrújula, or sobresdrújula. Recognizing it correctly is the basis for applying any tilde rule.

HiatoHiatus.

El diptongo reúne dos vocales en una sola sílaba, pero el hiato las separa en sílabas distintas. Cuando una vocal abierta como a, e u o se encuentra con una cerrada tónica como í o ú, se rompe el diptongo y aparece hiato. Esa separación puede obligar a escribir tilde en la vocal cerrada para marcar la ruptura silábica.

A diphthong brings two vowels together in one syllable, but hiatus separates them into separate syllables. When an open vowel such as a, e, or o is followed by a stressed closed vowel such as í or ú, the diphthong is broken and a hiatus appears. This separation may require writing an accent on the closed vowel to mark the syllabic break.

MonosílabosMonosyllables.

Los monosílabos suelen escribirse sin tilde porque solo tienen una sílaba y no necesitan marcar la posición del acento. La excepción aparece cuando la tilde diacrítica diferencia dos palabras de forma y función distintas. Por eso la norma general es sin tilde, salvo los pares contrastivos establecidos por uso y tradición.

Monosyllables are usually written without an accent because they have only one syllable and do not need to mark the position of the stress. The exception occurs when the diacritical tilde distinguishes two words with different form and function.
