Gustar expresses that something produces pleasure, interest or preference. The central idea is not “I do something”, but “something pleases me”. Therefore the normal structure is a alguien + le + gusta algo. In everyday conversation, the person part is usually left only in the pronoun: me gusta el café, te gusta esa canción, nos gusta la playa. The verb appears frequently to talk about food, music, activities, places and plans.

With gustar you use indirect object pronouns: me, te, le, nos, os, les. Each one points to whom it pleases something. Me gusta indicates pleasure for me, te gusta for you, le gusta for him, her or you, nos gusta for us, os gusta for you all and les gusta for them, them or you all. The full structure can include the person at the start: A Ana le gusta bailar, A mis padres les gusta viajar. That part does not change the verb; it only clarifies who feels the pleasure. To see this system in more detail, it is worth reviewing Pronombres de objeto indirecto.

The verb form depends on what comes after. Use gusta when the subject is a single thing, an infinitive activity or a single idea: me gusta el chocolate, nos gusta salir temprano. Use gustan when the subject is plural: me gustan las películas, les gustan los perros. The verb agrees with the element that causes the pleasure, not with the person who feels it.

The forms gustado and gustando exist, but they are not used the same as in normal action verbs. Gustado appears in compound tenses: me ha gustado la comida, nos había gustado el hotel. Gustando is very rare in common use and does not function as a usual gerund to express preference. In everyday Spanish, the idea of pleasure is expressed with present, past or compound forms, not with a periphrasis based on gustando.

Gustarse changes the meaning. It no longer simply means that something pleases, but that a person pleases themselves or that two people are attracted to each other. In everyday language it may appear in phrases like se gusta demasiado to talk about someone very satisfied with themselves. It can also indicate mutual attraction: se gustaron desde el primer día. The reflexive structure uses the same reflexive pronouns and usually talks about personal relationships, appearance or self-perception.

In some regions, especially in parts of Spain, le or les appears where elsewhere you would expect lo or la in certain pronominal uses. With gustar, the basic system remains: le gusta, les gusta. When there is leísmo in the region, the person who receives the pleasure is still marked with le or les, and the meaning does not change. The important thing is to preserve the verb’s agreement with what pleases: le gusta el café, les gustan las películas.
