Periodización

El español moderno temprano suele situarse entre finales del siglo XV y el siglo XVIII, pero sus límites exactos cambian según la tradición filológica. Algunos estudios lo hacen comenzar con cambios fonológicos y ortográficos del tránsito del medievo al Renacimiento, mientras otros privilegian criterios literarios, gramaticales o sociopolíticos. Por eso, no existe una frontera completamente fija ni con el español antiguo ni con el español contemporáneo.

Early Modern Spanish tends to be placed between the late 15th century and the 18th century, but its exact boundaries vary according to philological tradition. Some studies place its beginning with phonological and orthographic changes at the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, while others favor literary, grammatical or sociopolitical criteria. Therefore, there is no completely fixed border with Old Spanish or with contemporary Spanish.

Transición histórica

Esta etapa enlaza el castellano medieval con variedades que ya resultan mucho más cercanas al español actual. Durante el llamado Siglo de Oro convivieron rasgos heredados del período anterior con innovaciones que después se estabilizaron o desaparecieron. La lengua escrita alcanzó una fuerte expansión cultural y administrativa, aunque la uniformidad seguía siendo limitada.

This stage links Medieval Castilian with varieties that are already much closer to modern Spanish. During the so-called Golden Age, inherited traits from the previous period coexisted with innovations that later stabilized or disappeared. The written language achieved a strong cultural and administrative expansion, although uniformity remained limited.

Pronunciación

Uno de los cambios más importantes de esta etapa afectó al sistema de sibilantes, que en la Edad Media era más amplio que en el español actual. Entre los siglos XVI y XVII se produjeron reajustes que modificaron oposiciones sonoras y sordas y dieron lugar a sistemas distintos según las regiones. El resultado no fue idéntico en toda la hispanidad, por lo que algunas diferencias modernas proceden de este mismo proceso.

One of the most important changes of this period affected the system of sibilants, which in the Middle Ages was broader than in modern Spanish. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, adjustments occurred that modified voiced and voiceless contrasts and gave rise to systems that differed by region. The result was not identical across the Hispanic world, so some modern differences originate from this same process.

Ortografía

La ortografía del español moderno temprano mostró una fuerte oscilación antes de la fijación académica posterior. Muchas grafías representaban hábitos heredados, intentos de reflejar cambios fonéticos o preferencias de escribanos e impresores. La relación entre letra y sonido era menos estable que en la norma contemporánea.

The orthography of Early Modern Spanish showed strong oscillation before later academic fixation. Many spellings reflected inherited habits, attempts to reflect phonetic changes, or preferences of scribes and printers. The relationship between letter and sound was less stable than in the contemporary standard.

Gramática

En la morfología y la sintaxis se observan formas heredadas del español medieval junto con usos que anuncian la norma moderna. Algunas construcciones verbales, pronominales y de tratamiento todavía estaban en transición, y no todas evolucionaron del mismo modo en todos los territorios. Por eso conviene hablar de tendencias históricas más que de reglas absolutas.

In morphology and syntax, inherited forms from medieval Spanish are observed together with usages that herald the modern standard. Some verbal, pronominal, and forms of address constructions were still in transition, and not all evolved in the same way across territories. Hence it is useful to speak of historical trends rather than absolute rules.

Tratamientos

La evolución de los pronombres de tratamiento es uno de los rasgos más visibles del español moderno temprano. Vos perdió parte de su valor original en muchas zonas, mientras vuestra merced avanzó como fórmula de respeto y acabó dando lugar a usted. Sin embargo, la cronología y el resultado social de estos cambios no fueron idénticos en todos los territorios hispánicos.

The evolution of pronouns of address is one of the most visible features of Early Modern Spanish. Vos lost part of its original value in many areas, while vuestra merced advanced as a form of respect and eventually gave rise to usted. However, the chronology and social outcome of these changes were not identical across all Hispanic territories.

Léxico

La expansión imperial, el contacto con otras lenguas y el prestigio literario ampliaron notablemente el vocabulario de la época. Entraron voces de origen americano, italianismos, latinismos cultos y términos administrativos, militares y científicos. No todos estos elementos se integraron con la misma rapidez ni con el mismo grado de estabilidad.

The imperial expansion, contact with other languages, and literary prestige notably broadened the vocabulary of the era. Words of American origin, Italianisms, learned Latinisms, and administrative, military, and scientific terms entered. Not all of these elements were integrated with the same speed or to the same degree of stability.

Frente al español antiguo, el español moderno temprano presenta una fonología en reorganización, una ortografía menos medieval y una proyección escrita mucho más amplia. Frente al español contemporáneo, conserva mayor variación gráfica, gramatical y social, además de soluciones todavía no fijadas. Identificar esta etapa consiste en reconocer una lengua de transición avanzada, no un sistema totalmente uniforme.

Compared to Old Spanish, Early Modern Spanish shows a phonology in reorganization, orthography less medieval, and a much broader written projection. Compared to contemporary Spanish, it preserves greater graphical, grammatical, and social variation, as well as solutions not yet fixed. Identifying this stage consists of recognizing a language in an advanced transition, not a completely uniform system.
