Qué son

Los sustantivos incontables nombran sustancias, materias o ideas que no se cuentan como unidades separadas. Normalmente se usan para hablar de algo continuo o no dividido, como agua, arroz o paciencia. En español, algunos nombres pueden ser incontables en un contexto y contables en otro, así que el uso depende del significado.

Uncountable nouns name substances, materials, or ideas that are not counted as separate units. They are normally used to talk about something continuous or not divided, such as water, rice, or patience. In Spanish, some nouns can be uncountable in one context and countable in another, so usage depends on meaning.

Contable o no

Un sustantivo contable se puede contar con números directos, como libro o silla. Un sustantivo incontable no suele ir con números sin una medida, como leche o azúcar. Algunos sustantivos cambian de valor según el contexto, por ejemplo café puede referirse a la sustancia o a una taza.

A countable noun can be counted with direct numbers, like book or chair. An uncountable noun usually does not go with numbers without a measure, like milk or sugar. Some nouns change meaning depending on the context, for example coffee can refer to the substance or to a cup.
