Qué son

Los adverbios son palabras que modifican un verbo, un adjetivo, otro adverbio o toda una oración. Expresan modo, tiempo, cantidad, afirmación, negación, duda y otros valores. En español, muchos adverbios se forman con -mente, pero también existen adverbios simples con formas propias.

Adverbs are words that modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or an entire sentence. They express manner, time, quantity, affirmation, negation, doubt, and other values. In Spanish, many adverbs are formed with -mente, but there are also simple adverbs with their own forms.

Con -mente

Muchos adverbios de modo se forman a partir de un adjetivo y la terminación -mente. En general, se usa la forma femenina singular del adjetivo si el adjetivo cambia en género. Si el adjetivo no cambia, se añade -mente directamente.

Many adverbs of manner are formed from an adjective and the -mente ending. In general, the feminine singular form of the adjective is used if the adjective changes gender. If the adjective does not change, -mente is added directly.

Base femenina

Con adjetivos variables, la base para formar el adverbio suele ser la forma femenina singular. Por eso, real da realmente, pero rápido da rápidamente y exacto da exactamente. Esta es la pauta general de formación.

With variable adjectives, the base for forming the adverb is usually the feminine singular form. Therefore, real becomes really, but rápido becomes rapidly, and exacto becomes exactly. This is the general rule for formation.

Adverbios simples

No todos los adverbios terminan en -mente. Hay adverbios simples muy frecuentes que tienen una forma fija y no se derivan de un adjetivo con esa terminación. Estas palabras son básicas en la lengua cotidiana.

Not all adverbs end in -mente. There are very common simple adverbs that have a fixed form and are not derived from an adjective with that ending. These words are basic in everyday language.

Sin -mente

También hay adverbios de modo, lugar, tiempo o cantidad que no llevan -mente. Algunas formas pueden alternar con expresiones distintas según el registro o la situación. Por eso, la opción más natural no siempre es la misma en todos los contextos.

There are also adverbs of manner, place, time, or quantity that do not take -mente. Some forms may alternate with different expressions depending on register or situation. Therefore, the most natural option is not always the same in all contexts.

Posición

El adverbio puede aparecer en distintas posiciones de la oración, según lo que modifica y el efecto informativo. Con frecuencia va cerca del verbo, pero también puede ir al principio o al final. La posición no es totalmente fija en todos los casos.

The adverb may appear in different positions in the sentence, depending on what it modifies and the informative effect. It is often near the verb, but it can also go at the beginning or at the end. The position is not completely fixed in all cases.
