Uso básico

El presente progresivo describe una acción que está en curso en el momento de hablar. Se forma con el verbo estar en presente y un gerundio. Se usa cuando la acción está pasando ahora y el hablante quiere mostrar ese proceso.

The present progressive describes an action that is in progress at the moment of speaking. It is formed with the verb to be in the present and a gerund. It is used when the action is happening now and the speaker wants to show that process.

Estructura

La estructura es estar más gerundio. El verbo estar cambia según la persona. El gerundio no cambia por persona ni por número.

The structure is be + gerund. The verb to be changes according to the person. The gerund does not change for person or number.

Gerundio -ar

Los verbos en -ar forman el gerundio con -ando. Esta forma es regular. El infinitivo pierde la terminación -ar y añade -ando.

Gerundio -er e -ir

Los verbos en -er y en -ir forman el gerundio con -iendo. Esta forma es regular en muchos verbos. El infinitivo pierde la terminación y añade -iendo.

Verbs ending in -er and -ir form the gerund with -iendo. This form is regular in many verbs. The infinitive loses its ending and adds -iendo.

Reflexivos

Con verbos reflexivos, el pronombre puede ir antes de estar o unido al gerundio. Las dos posiciones son normales. El significado no cambia, pero la pronunciación puede cambiar si el pronombre se une al gerundio.

With reflexive verbs, the pronoun can go before the verb to be or attached to the gerund. Both positions are normal. The meaning does not change, but pronunciation can change if the pronoun is attached to the gerund.

El presente simple también puede hablar de una acción actual en algunos contextos. En español, muchas personas usan el presente simple para acciones del momento, y el presente progresivo añade más énfasis en que la acción está en desarrollo.

The present progressive is natural when the action occurs right now and the speaker wants to mark duration or process. The simple present can also refer to a current action in some contexts. In Spanish, many people use the simple present for momentary actions, and the present progressive adds more emphasis that the action is developing.
