Uso básico

El pasado progresivo expresa una acción que estaba en desarrollo en un momento del pasado. No presenta la acción como terminada, sino como en proceso. Se usa para decir qué estaba pasando en ese momento.

The past progressive expresses an action that was in progress at a moment in the past. It does not present the action as finished, but as in progress. It is used to say what was happening at that moment.

Formación

El pasado progresivo se forma con el verbo estar en imperfecto y un gerundio. Estar aporta el tiempo del pasado y el gerundio expresa la acción en progreso. La estructura general es sujeto más estar en imperfecto más gerundio.

The past progressive is formed with the verb estar in the imperfect and a gerund. Estar provides the past tense and the gerund expresses the action in progress. The general structure is subject plus estar in the imperfect plus gerund.

Estar

Para formar este tiempo, estar cambia según el sujeto. En el pasado progresivo, estar va en imperfecto. Estas formas se usan con sujetos singulares y plurales.

To form this tense, estar changes depending on the subject. In the past progressive, estar is in the imperfect. These forms are used with singular and plural subjects.

Gerundio regular

El gerundio regular se forma con la raíz del verbo y las terminaciones ando o iendo. Los verbos en ar usan ando. Los verbos en er e ir usan iendo.

Regular gerund is formed with the verb stem and the endings -ando or -iendo. Verbs ending in -ar use -ando. Verbs ending in -er and -ir use -iendo.

Gerundio frecuente

Algunos gerundios frecuentes son irregulares y deben aprenderse en su forma propia. Se usan también en el pasado progresivo. La estructura del tiempo no cambia.

Some common gerunds are irregular and must be learned in their own form. They are also used in the past progressive. The structure of the tense does not change.

Momento pasado

Este tiempo se usa para hablar de una acción en progreso en un momento concreto del pasado. El momento puede estar indicado por una expresión de tiempo o por la situación. La atención está en la acción que continuaba en ese instante.

This tense is used to talk about an action in progress at a specific moment in the past. The moment can be indicated by a time expression or by the situation. The focus is on the action that was continuing at that moment.

The past progressive can appear with a punctual action that interrupts the action in progress. The past progressive shows the background of the situation. The punctual action marks the event that occurs at that moment.
