Qué son

Los pronombres indefinidos sustituyen a un nombre cuando la persona, la cosa o la cantidad no se identifican de manera exacta. Sirven para hablar de referentes no específicos, desconocidos o generales. En esta clase funcionan como núcleo del grupo nominal, no como acompañantes de un sustantivo.

Indefinite pronouns substitute for a noun when the person, the thing, or the quantity is not identified precisely. They are used to talk about non-specific, unknown, or general referents. In this unit they function as the head of the noun phrase, not as modifiers of a noun.

Pronombre y adjetivo

Algunas formas indefinidas pueden funcionar como pronombres o como adjetivos indefinidos. Son pronombres cuando reemplazan al sustantivo y no aparece un nombre expreso. Son adjetivos cuando acompañan a un sustantivo, aunque la forma usada puede ser la misma.

Cantidad imprecisa

Alguien, nadie, algo y nada expresan existencia o ausencia de personas y cosas no determinadas. Alguien y nadie se usan para personas. Algo y nada se usan para cosas, hechos o ideas. En oraciones negativas, la posición de estas formas cambia según aparezcan antes o después del verbo.

Someone, nobody, something, and nothing express existence or absence of people and things not determined. Someone and nobody are used for people. Totalidad

Todo, todos, todas y cada uno expresan totalidad o distribución general. Todo puede referirse a una realidad completa o abstracta, mientras que todos y todas suelen señalar un conjunto identificable. Cada uno presenta los elementos de un grupo de manera individual dentro de un conjunto.

All, all (masculine), all (feminine), and each one express totality or general distribution. All can refer to a complete or abstract reality, while all (masculine) and all (feminine) typically indicate an identifiable set. Each one presents the elements of a group individually within a set.

Cualquiera

Cualquiera expresa elección no específica o indiferencia entre opciones. Puede referirse a personas o cosas, y su interpretación depende mucho del contexto. En algunos usos aparece una diferencia entre cualquiera y cualquier, pero esa diferencia pertenece a la función sintáctica de la palabra. Expresiones como cualquiera que introducen matices más abiertos y no siempre se interpretan igual en todos los registros.

Any expresses non-specific choice or indifference among options. It can refer to people or things, and its interpretation depends heavily on context. Afirmación y negación

Los pronombres indefinidos aparecen en oraciones afirmativas, negativas e interrogativas. Nadie y nada suelen relacionarse con la negación, pero en español pueden combinarse con no según su posición en la oración. Si el pronombre negativo va antes del verbo, normalmente no aparece no; si va después, normalmente sí aparece. En preguntas, estas formas no siempre afirman ni niegan, sino que dejan la referencia abierta.
