Qué son

Los adjetivos cuantitativos acompañan a un sustantivo y expresan cantidad, grado o cantidad aproximada. Indican ideas como mucha agua, poca comida, suficiente tiempo o demasiadas preguntas. Se diferencian de los numerales porque no suelen dar una cifra exacta, aunque algunos usos pueden acercarse a una cantidad concreta según el contexto.

Quantitative adjectives accompany a noun and express quantity, degree, or approximate amount. They indicate ideas like a lot of water, little food, enough time, or too many questions. They differ from numerals because they do not usually give an exact figure, although some uses may approach a concrete amount depending on the context.

Cantidad indefinida

Mucho, poco, bastante, demasiado y suficiente son cuantitativos frecuentes para hablar de cantidad no exacta. Van normalmente delante del sustantivo. Con sustantivos contables e incontables, la idea de cantidad cambia según lo que nombra el sustantivo.

Much, little, quite a bit, too much and enough are common quantifiers for talking about non-exact quantity. They normally come before the noun. With countable and uncountable nouns, the idea of quantity changes depending on what the noun denotes.

Contables e incontables

Con sustantivos contables, el cuantitativo se interpreta como número de elementos. Con sustantivos incontables, se interpreta como cantidad o masa. Esta diferencia no cambia la función del cuantitativo, pero sí la manera de entender la cantidad.

With countable nouns, the quantifier is interpreted as the number of items. With uncountable nouns, it is interpreted as amount or mass. This difference does not change the function of the quantifier, but it does change how the quantity is understood.

Cantidad relativa

Algunos cuantitativos comparan la cantidad con una referencia implícita. Mucho indica cantidad alta, poco indica cantidad baja, suficiente indica necesidad cubierta y demasiado indica exceso. Bastante puede significar cantidad suficiente o cantidad notable, y esa interpretación puede variar entre hablantes y contextos.
