Qué es

El alfabeto español es el conjunto de letras que se usa para escribir palabras en español. Tiene veintisiete letras. Cada letra tiene un nombre, una forma mayúscula y una forma minúscula.

The Spanish alphabet is the set of letters used to write words in Spanish. It has twenty-seven letters. Each letter has a name, an uppercase form, and a lowercase form.

Las letras

Cada letra tiene un nombre fijo en español. Para deletrear, se dicen los nombres de las letras en orden. La ch y la ll no son letras del alfabeto actual.

Each letter has a fixed name in Spanish. To spell, the names of the letters are spoken in order. Ch and ll are not letters of the current alphabet.

Letras y sonidos

Una letra es un signo escrito, y un sonido es lo que se oye al hablar. Una misma letra puede representar sonidos diferentes según la palabra. Al aprender el alfabeto, primero se aprende el nombre de la letra y después su uso en palabras.

A letter is a written sign, and a sound is what is heard when speaking. A letter can represent different sounds depending on the word. When learning the alphabet, you first learn the letter's name and then its use in words.

Nombres especiales

Algunas letras reciben atención especial por su nombre. La h se llama hache. La v se llama uve y la b se llama be. La y puede llamarse ye; también existe el nombre i griega en algunos contextos.

Some letters receive special attention for their name. The h is called hache. The v is called uve and the b is called be. The y can be called ye; the Greek i name also exists in some contexts.

Orden alfabético

Las letras siguen un orden fijo desde a hasta z, con ñ entre n y o. Este orden sirve para buscar palabras y para deletrear con claridad. Cuando se deletrea, se dice una letra después de otra en el orden necesario de la palabra.

The letters follow a fixed order from a to z, with ñ between n and o. This order is used to search for words and to spell clearly. When spelling, you say one letter after another in the word's necessary order.

Mayúsculas y minúsculas

Cada letra tiene una forma mayúscula y una forma minúscula. El nombre de la letra no cambia por la forma escrita. A y a son la misma letra, igual que Ñ y ñ.

Each letter has an uppercase form and a lowercase form. The name of the letter does not change with the written form. A and a are the same letter, just as Ñ and ñ.
